Possible Oil Pump Trouble?

Had a the PTO side cylinder melt down on my 97 ZRT600 and suspect that the issue to be the oil pump, I replaced all the 1/8 hose from the pump to the carbs verified that all the brass nipples on the carb boot are clear and I've remove the pump just for visual inspection. I reinstallled and reconnected all the lines / adjusted the cable...I also blew into the resvior vent line to get things pimed a bit... The hose runnig from the pump to the PTO carb has not filled completely the other two lines however appear to have oil in them. Was wondering if this normal since the PTO hose length is the longest or does the machine need to be running first to pull vaccuum on these lines. Just to be safe I plan to use a bit of mixed gas when I start the machine and watch to see if the line fills. Need to know how to bench test oil pump or a more effective means to prime it...I don't want another meltdown next year.

there should be a screw or bolt on the oil pump itself, you take out to let the oil push out any air bubbles to prime the system. didn't read that in your question, may try that before starting engine.

Pump will self prime. PreMix is a must, IMO, at first fire. You could leave the plugs out and pull 10-12 times. Then you'll see the oil lines are primed. This should prime the carbs too. Should fire right up when you reinstall the plugs.

I doubt if the melt down was due to the pump. When they fail, they fail wide open.

When you start it for the first time during idle, manually open the oil pump wide open. Let the oil pump as if you are at wot. That will get it going fast. Also mix your first tank for saftey.

oil Pump

Pre mix gas and then start motor and let it idle. Take a piece of wire about 18 inches long and put a hook on the end of it and while the machine is idleing reach down with your wire hook and grab the oil pump lever and pull it up simulating WOT. hold for about 30 seconds then release the lever and let it idle for a minute to burn the excess oil out of the cylinders so you don't oil foul a plug the repeat the process a couple more times. This will take all the air out of the lines and prime the system.

What i usually is open the bleeder for the oil pump before starting the sled and let oil come out i then close the bleeder start the sled and hold the oil pump wide open for a couple minutes. I feel that combining rozzy43's and snowboss's methods is the best way to bleed the system and that is why i do. i always say i would rather foul out two plugs then an engine. Make sure when you get the sled running you check your oil to fuel ratio which should be 50:1 or richer. to check this fill both your gas and oil all the way ride the sled and when you go to fill up with gas fill up with oil as well. make sure you record the amount of both the gas and oil you put in and figure out the ratio to make sure it is ok. here is a calculator that i found online to make the calculations quicker
