Pouring mineral oil in cylinders for summer storage

I've seen some guys on here or somewhere else say they pour some mineral oil in the cylinders after fogging their sleds and then pull the cord slowly a couple times to get it through the engine based on the premise that the synthetic oil they run doesn't coat the internals as well for the off season. Without getting into an oil debate, if you were going to do this, how much oil would you pour in? An ounce on each side? Any downsides to doing this?

I run legend oil, a mineral based oil. The maker of it himself said not to mix with any synthetic. Personally i would put the same oil your running down the cylinder. We always did this when running synthetics and never had a problem. I cant say exactly how much but we would put at least a few squirts from a standard oil can and turn them over. More oil wont hurt a thing, just smoke more in fall when you first start them.

Why would you just not squirt some fogging oil down the spark plug holes after fogging through the intake? Isn't fogging oil designed to adhere to the inside of the engine components? I have always done this and never had an issue in 40 plus years.

When I had my 600 SDI, the owner's manual called for pouring 1 oz. 30 weight oil into each cylinder (after fogging) and slowly pulling the starter rope 10 times. FWIW......your brand/sled may vary.

I always pour 2 ounces of VES down each cylinder and turn them over several times.

Agree fogging oil seems to adhere much better than syn or mineral oil but can't go wrong either way...just need extra plugs to burn the stuff off in Fall.

I have always just parked them indoors after the season, greased them up to remove water from the suspension and called it good.........has worked for last 22 years. Used to start them every other month but now with E START I remove the batteries also.
If you get a bunch of condensation on them i can see fogging them, but if you keep them dry and able to "breathe" they seem to do just fine.....

Its beneficial, you maybe able to get away without doing this, but its not a good idea, IMO, regardless of the enivironment. Plus most sleds arent stored in a climate controlled environment with a de-humidifier. The auto-summerization mode on the etec simply floods the engine with oil and then kills the engine, and says DO NOT start engine until your next ride. It uses whatever is in the injection tank, which is usually synthetic. Any oil will work IMO, just like typical oil threads, some maybe better than others.

I don't think the OP has an etec engine agree no need to remove plugs & fog.... my etec outboard also has auto-summerization smokes pretty good on first Spring start up.

I kno he doesnt have etec, but was just using that as an example of what a engineered factory system does. Doesnt matter if the oil is synthetic or not.
