Premium fuel in a 4 stroke...

Does anyone run premium fuel in a stock 4 stroke and if so how does it run. I know the manual says to run 87 oct and I don't mind that but I run premium in all my other sleds and usually pay with a card so it would be kind of a hassle to fill the other sleds up and then mine. More reciept to carry and so on just to save $1.00 each time we stop.

The sled will run fine just cost more then necessary to run.I put premium in my Yamaha and it doesn't seem to care. Maybe start a little easier

I have a 2006 FST Classic and I do notice a difference when I run Premium. I always buy the Premium if it's available!

Depends on the engine if better or not. What engine? Premium will not hurt any 4s out there just spending more on gas than you need to.

put 6500 miles on a 07 yamaha attak with zero probs. Never ran an ounce of any thing more than 87. I think the guys over at totalyamaha will tell you they made more power and ran better on the 87. Most of my fuel was with ethenol also.

More often some of the stations have ethanol free premium which is always better, but I have always noticed better fuel economy with more octane so I don't feel it's money wasted.

Yea it's an 06 attak. I know they say to use what it is supposed to and I don't have a problem with that I just figured I ain't gunna use 10 gal at the same pace that the two strokes are and I got 1 minimum and 3 max two strokes to fill everytime we pull up to the pump. I just want to avoild filling them, then hanging up the hose, waiting for reciept, so I can do it all over again in the yammy that's all.. So if i use 8 gall that means I am only paying 80 cents to a buck extra which is well worth it if it is going to be more convienant.

it will not hurt.but if you are looking for performance buy dumping prem into a 87 octane motor you are wasting money you are loosing HP buy running 92octane.you want to run the lowest octane you can before denotation.in theory I should run 92or better in the ported piped f7.but she runs faster on 87.if running NOS it needs 100+ and running the 100+ with out the fun gas she is most deff slower close to a sec in a 1/4.

You do not need to run premium in a 4 stroke stock snowmobile, hence the word stock. The octane the factories tell you to run is what you should run. Compression of the engine weather it's 2 stroke or 4 stroke will determine what octane fuel you run. A yamaha 4stroke other than the phazer needs only 87 octane for the simple fact that the apex and vector are not hi compression engines. So yes, you're wasting your money if you run premium and the engine does not require it. Also, I highly recommend non ethanol fuel if you can get it. Much easier on the engine and carbs if you have them especially on the 2 strokes. We're performing alot more carb cleanings here than ever before due to the poor fuel.

My 2006 FST says 91 octane on the ownership manual supplement. It definately makes a difference on the FST engine!

Octane in fuel is directly related to the compression ratio of your engine. Because an engine has a turbo on it.. might suggest a higher compression ratio. (Mostly in cars, not as much in sleds)
Saying something is stock.. doesn't mean it takes 87. There are MANY stock cars 1980's thru today, that "recommend" 91-93 octane.
Most engines especially these days have knock sensors that sense early detonation. (This happens when the fuel combusts before the spark fires) This can happen in a high compression engine, with a lower octane fuel. Because they have knock sensors, the sense this and retard the timing, to reduce detonation. So almost all engines will run on 87.
A little research on Octane and Compression ratio's might tell you whether your engine will benefit from higher octane fuels.

dont waist your hard earned jing ••••• will run the same on what ever fuel you put into it but87 oct. is recamended . The race team for haulk only use 87 oct. they put higer oct. in and it looses H.P. figure that one out even in there turbo racers ,. ive tryed 91 oct no difference ! you will hear all kinds of stories call haulk and ask them what they run Haulk Power sports Rice Lake WI. or go on there website !!
