Primary Clutch

I have 1998 ZR500 and the primary clutch needs work or should be replaced. I have not rebuilt a clutch ever and was wondering if it is possible to order a clutch stock calibrated for the sled?Plug and play I guess you could say.

You can buy a "blank" clutch and transfer your weights and spring over to it. Or you can order one that is already calibrated for the sled but that will be more $$. You are looking at $300-$400 installed using your own weights and spring, if the dealer is not gouging you. I had a clutch and spring installed with my old weights for $350 a few years ago at TA Motorsports.

Being a 1998, at the very least, it will require new pins & bushings. This model sled should have these done every season. The high rev's generated wear these quicker than your average.. Check it out good now, it could cost you a lot later & be a major inconvenience.-Mezz

I was going to say, even the weights can wear where the pin goes through them, don't just put them on a "newer" clutch thinking they are good without a good inspection.

Thanks erza. I think that may be the way I go. I have two 1998 500,s and a 2000. Like I said I have never done clutch work myself so if C. Cat can fix me up I still may try to do the shot clutch in my shop and keep it around for a spare. All of these ZR,s have less than 3000 miles on them so spending 400-500 to keep them rolling is not the issue I guess. Time to pick up some specialized tools. Thanks for the help erza.

Thanks erza. I like that idea. I can pull it out, ship it and re-install. The only problem with it is that the clutch will not spring open quite enough to "kick out" the belt all of the time. Thanks for all off the help!
