Prisoner Research

I have a question I need input on for a class I am taking. Should inmates at prisons be used (informed consent) for research projects?

If the research is to do a study of how long it takes a chain gang to clean up a road ditch or dirty neighborhood or provide a menial task for the benefit of society as a whole, I say absolutely!

Yes and No

Yes if their non-violent offenders, some types of research can help with society and its needs, if their violent (including all sex crimes) offenders no because they lost everything once they inflict pain or death on someone!

Actually, I would say NOT.

If anything goes wrong with the research project, and a health issue came up somewhere down the road, guess who gets sued?? So unless this is not something that could become detrimental to their health in some way or other, definitely not. Lining up a "class" of people because they are "handy" is rarely a good idea.

Now if you put an advertisement in the paper, and someone who is incarcerated volunteered for the spot, there would be far less likelyhood that this would come back to haunt the researcher. But dipping into a pool that in the eyes of the law, are "in the temporary care of the state" puts the state/feds squarely in the line of fire if something unexpected comes along from the consequences of the trial.

I agree and also think why give inmates the oppurtunity to participate. They are in prison to serve their time, let them sit in their cells and think about what they have done. If the research project involved giving them any sort of freedom or extra time out of their cells or alloted 'free/grounds' time then I say NO!

prob is they dont sit in there cells and think about what they have done insted they hook up with there old gang buds or join a gang.then sell drugs or protection or my fave sell there child molester cell mates "company" unless he has money then he can pay for a gangs protection.the prison system is f ed up in this country so many guys locked up for decades on BS drug charges pot farmers doing 20+ yrs. some day the gov is going to realize they lost the war on drugs over 15yrs ago and quit pissing away billions a yr on vice crimes.
