Private Prop Parking Ticket at a Public High School...?

I went down to MSU to visit my friend this past weekend and I always leave my car at the East Lansing High School overnight. I’ve never had a problem with this before but I got a ticket and it says it’s a Private Property Parking ticket for 40 bucks. Maybe I am way of base here but it seems like a Public High School is not private property??

It's possible they treat it like a city street after a certain date due to snowplow regulations. Not sure on that, but a possibility.

The school is considered "private property" because it is not open for public travel except as an access to the school. It is owned by the school district, even though the school is a public building.

towns and cities are so strapped for cash nowadays that they are writing tickets for anything that is inforceable,... anything for a little revenue... jmho

I bet that between my friends and I we have parked over 50 cars there this summer, and now when there was a total of 4 cars in the parking lot every single one of them got a ticket. I got this ticket on Friday night. I would guarantee that if I went back on Saturday (home football game) that the parking lot would be full.

Guess I’m just going to have to bite the bullet and pay it.

I actually called the ELPD and they said the school principal asked them to patrol the parking lot. They said it was because of the liability insurance.

snowdog, I think it was the "W" on the bumper sticker. Some scrools are sensitive the the letter "W". Something about a child left behind.

never pay a tax without going to see the hearing officer!Even for just 40 bucks ever!make them drop the fine if there were no no parking signs.I would most deff fight it.I don't care what they say about private property I would bring my yearly property tax statements with and make them explain why I am paying for private property.
