private property

A while back there was a post regarding how bergland residents were frustrated with people riding, parking and damaging property. I responded how I felt about it and so did others, some supportive of property owners and others that weren't and just thought people should look the other way. I am a business owner and have a chunk of property behind me, I am close to a gas station almost right across the street. I am also a snowmobiler and have been for more than 30 years, there are no marked trails on my property however there is a trail that goes back on my property that I and my neighbor use and on occasion a snowmobiler will use to access the gas station, due to some property damage I was forced to put up no trespassing signs up and I placed them also where I knew people were accessing the property from. most were removed and tossed to the side I even was confronted by someone who thought it was someone elses property and I explained why the signs were up and made it clear not to abuse the property or invite others to use it and granted him permission to use. I have a 1 ton diesel pick up with retracting tow mirrors and had it parked in "MY" lot and came into work this morning to find the passenger mirror up against the window and damaged, along with snowmobile tracks right along it, the mirror is damaged and now will not retract in or out or back into place by motor. Well...... Ive had it with those that think when the white stuff falls that they are entitled to go where ever the snowmobile will take them. I'm sure some smart *** will say I shouldn't have left the truck parked there, and I'm sure whomever did it either took the mirror to the helmet or upper body, no one has claimed responsibility (surprise surprise) and just ruined it for everyone else, for those that think property owners should look the other way because snowmobilers are a good part of the economy when the snow flies, or how where ever their machine can go so can they. A couple words of advice..... If there isn't a trail marked on it.... STAY OFF OF IT, If there are signs posted...... STAY OFF OF IT, and if its not your property......STAY OFF OF IT. Just because the season is so short, or you need to get somewhere the trail doesn't go, RESPECT property that isn't yours and if you do "accidentally" damage something on property you shouldn't be on anyways.... Grow some balls and come forward!. To whom ever it was I hope you got your gas you needed, but that's ok because Ill pay for the mirror which will probably cost me much more that what you put in your tank the entire season. Thank you again! and if its not your property STAY OFF!!!

I would like to see if your caught on private property $1000 fine $500 DNR and $500 to the land owner plus impound the vehicles. Any damages should be charged also.

Sorry to hear about that euphoric1, disappointing to hear. There shouldn't even need to be a discussion about private property, its called private property for a reason. There simply are no excuses for trespassing. My favorite excuse it "well there wasn't a no trespassing sign." I have heard of dumb people but this is near the top.

This year in general it just seems like the trespassing/off trail riding/loud cans has become way out of hand. Granted the UP is the only place with snow so everyone is flocking there, in one weekend up there I saw more loud can paddle track sleds running anywhere they wanted off trail, more than I have seen in the last couple years combined. This region being Mass City north, where there is very very little, or absolutely no public land. I fear these issues will accelerate trail closures and the eventual death of our sport.

Damage to your mirror sucks.
I also hear you on being responsible about damage. We have had three different rigs get hit in parking lots over the years. Last one took out a tail light. Tracks right up to the vehicle with nice new dual carbides on the sled. Pieces of light all over the ground. No note.

It is sad how the bad apples ruin it for the rest. We have intentionally stayed off friends property because we didn't want to leave tracks that someone else might follow. We have been invited to ride there, but we don't want to leave tracks that might give the invitation to other riders.

Side story from last week; We were sitting on the side of a trail enjoying a nice break. There were signs all over this section stating, "Stay On Trail". We could hear a very loud sled coming toward us. Rider went by on his piped sled running no headlight and wearing a backpack. The cliches were inescapable. He never even came within 50 yards of being on the trail. This was along a trail that had already been rerouted because of lost access on the original route. It was a busy area near resort lodging. I fear how bad the next reroute will be in that area, but I can point to a cause.

In response to some of your responses, yes I'm sure insurance will cover it, I am to a point an understanding person and a supporter of the sport and I allowed the use of land until property damage occurred, and like I said the signs were either just ignored or removed and tossed to the side. but ONE person had the respect to approach me and in turn gave him permission but after this morning there will be no more passing through the property to get gas, sorry to say it but one person with disregard fro someone elses property ruined it for everyone because there is no other easy path to the station from here. Do I feel sorry for everyone? pretty hard to, should I look the other way? I think not. I pretty much ride in the U.P. and see the signs and also see the clear disregard for them but have to laugh when I see people post that because of their contribution to the economy we should look the other way or since someone is starting to enforce rules and signage that we will just "roll on through" well... this time it happened to me and I'm not to happy about it. We shouldn't have to have posts about this yes, and I'm sure the same people who cant read signs wont be able to read this either so whats the point. we live in a world today that lacks respect and flows over with disregard, people are riding the trails out here too even though they are NOT open. I've said what I have to say but will leave with one thing SNOWMOBILING IS A PRIVELAGE..... NOT A RIGHT!!!!

1st-Very sorry about your situation and the damage. Obviously I've got a few sleds and like the sport, but it really pisses me off when guys run through my front lawn instead of cutting out to the road for 100yrds. Ride my field "edges" all you want, but stay off the grass. My brick paver sidewalk has taken a few hits that they probably didn't even know it was there.

2nd- Categorizing off trail riding/trespassing into the same group also pisses me off, as well as Snowmobiling/Drunks. Virtually 100% off the off trail riders Ive road with have 100% respect for private property. Most cary gps, maps, have phone apps and do research to where they can go and know where they're at. Cutting across my lawn is just disrespect and total lack of consideration(trespassing), not off trail "boon docking". When we go into town or ride the trails to the next spot, chances are I'm riding slower than most, and definitely not cutting across a lawn or flowerbed. Yes, most of us have modified exhaust... But hitting 8k just to make some noise is not going to happen in town. Most of the time theres not enough snow in town to hookup a 3" track.

"i see youre from wisconsin. they were probably drunk and didnt know any better, everyone in wisconsin is drunk"

Alright that does it...you people from Illinoise come up here and use up all our snow, shoot our deer, tip our cows and eat our cheese. Monday we start "building the wall." In the mean time the bar is open and prices are double for out of staters. :drunk:

sorry to hear you are having a problem with one of your neighbors, euphoric....But why post it like this in an attempt to give snowmobilers another black eye?...All the trails are C L O S E D in your area....CLOSED....From what you have indicated in your rant, it shouldn't be that hard to pinpoint which one of your neighbors, or neighbors kids damaged your truck. Follow the tracks.

I live in earshot of a main corridor trail and have not heard one sled come through nor have there been any tracks all season because the trails in Racine and Walworth Co. along with the rest of the southern half of the state is C L O S E D .

And YES it would be very tempting to ride because there is 8" a snow on the ground.
Overall I am real damn proud of the restraint and responsible behavior I have seen this year!

I don't live far from your shop...want me to track 'em down?....LOL

Thanks snowbuilder but no don't need help tracking them down, neighbor also come over and asked if I knew who was riding back there and I told him what happened, he keeps cameras out in back, I'm not looking to prosecute or anything but no one will be going through here to get to station any longer, and I only posted this because there are a lot of people who think they can go where ever their sleds take them, I know a there are people that don't but this one ruined it for those that respected it. My neighbor has a 79 Yamaha 250 that his kids put around the yard on, guess I am a little frustrated. Looking forward to my trip to the U.P. mid feb need to get a way for a while and as I have said before this is really the only time of the year I get to ride, because when its snowing here I'm too busy to ride for the most part. I'm not trying to give the sport a black eye because I have been snowmobiling long enough and have had my share of encounters to know that for the most part the snowmobiling population are good people.

Sad that 1 person can Fu$& stuff up. However same time I agree with dnr imposing a fine. But the absolute flip side is honest mistakes do happen and I was almost arrested for an honest mistake. Was riding the yoop I won’t say location as it will indicate the home and area I speak of but fresh snow zero in the snow except ours and the trail the last time I rode went straight well it was actually re routed no signs (common issue last year ) well the old trail wasn’t froze up couldn’t tell till it was to late. Buried my. Sled and turns out said property owner called the cops blah blah almost arrested has to explain my self a million times it sucked. All over a honest mistake and lack of signs

The wife and I was eating lunch in a place in Bergland yesterday when a group of guys came in, about a dozen. They came down the road, not the trail which is directly behind the place.

One of the employees mentioned to them, very nicely by the way, that riding on the road will get you a ticket in Bergland.

Their response was F*** them, they have to catch us first and something about, "we drove 9 hours to get here and we aren't hurting anything". Before they left a second employee recommended they use the trail off the parking lot.

When they left they went ripping west up the highway towards the gas station.

You can't help stupid........

Sounds like Bergland is the wild west....did they fire their six shooters in the air too?.....makes me happy for where I ride......never saw or heard a group act like what you describe.
