Question about November Trail riding

OK, so we know there will be rid-able conditions by tomorrow evening, what does this mean for trails that don't open till Dec 1st? Are there still areas to ride?

Deer Season - bullets in the air. You going to feel safe? Not to mention how much you will piss people off.

Many trails use private property. I am pretty sure some of this private land is leased and the leases allowing snowmobile use do not start till Dec 1st. Not to mention there isn't a base yet. Any trail with a gate will still be locked til Dec 1st. Nothing says you can not go for a ride, just be smart so you don't ruin something for the rest of us. Stay off private land/trails. Stick to the public roads/ditches. Plus what snocrazy typed!

In Michigan there are some rules that may apply here:

A Person Shall Not Operate a Snowmobile:

  • While under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • At a rate of speed greater than is reasonable for existing conditions.
  • In a forest nursery, planting area or public lands posted or reasonably identifiable as an area or forest reproduction when growing stock may be damaged or any designated wild, wilderness or natural area in the state.
  • On the frozen surface of public waters within 100 feet of a person, including a skater, not in or upon a snowmobile or within 100 feet of a fishing shanty or shelter except at the minimum speed required to maintain forward movement of the snowmobile, or on an area that has been cleared for ice skating, unless the area is necessary for gaining access to the public water.
  • Within 100 feet of a dwelling between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. at a speed greater than the minimum required to maintain forward movement of the snowmobile.
  • Upon the land of another without consent of the owner or their agent, as required by the recreational trespass act.
  • In an area open to public hunting during the November 15-30 firearm deer season from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • While transporting a bow unless it is unstrung or encased, or a firearm unless it is unloaded and securely encased.
  • ? On or across a cemetery or burial ground, airport, railroad or a railroad right-of-way, or within 100 feet of a sledding, skiing or skating area.
  • To chase, pursue, worry or kill any wild bird or animal.
  • In a public or private parking lot in a careless or negligent manner.

You just waited all summer for snow. One more day won't kill ya. Don't risk screwing it up for other sledders, and don't give all of us a bad name by pushing it and going out too soon. Patience Grasshopper!!!

Ah, bummer....

I would probably ride unplowed dirt roads, but its not really worth trailering up the sleds for that alone.

Here's my edited version I should submit to the state legislature.

We are heading up to Kalkaska to ride the fire trails and whatever else we can get on. We can be out from 5pm till 7am to comply with the hunting season.

I'm a hunter as well, so I really do understand where they are coming from.

In Wisconsin you can ride the year round trails like the Tri-County Corridor (Ashland-Superior) and the Wild Rivers trail (Rice Lake to Superior) on ATV's and sleds.

We used to be able to run the wiouwash trail from Hortonville to Oshkosh (Railroad Bed) but there was always that bonehead that would wander off the rr grade and start riding the "real trails". Wasn't long before the gates got thrown up which didn't help either now we can't do it at all.

Kind of off topic from the OP's statement but I was wondering when the Lakes usually freeze over up north to be able to safetly ride on? Looking at heading to Lake Gogebic on the 13 of December and i've been watching the web cam and see it isn't froze over or seem to have any ice on it yet. Thanks in advance.

It won't be frozen by then, look at next weeks forecast.
