Ran out of Gas

Buddy ran out on the way to Sayner. We knew we would close but ran out right in front of Still Waters Bar. Walked into bar and a local had a full 5 gallon can in his truck, gave him $40 and on our way we went.

anyone run out of gas?

Had a friend run out of gas about 20 feet from the pump at the Watersmeet station. He actually ran out about 3 miles prior to that but found out he could keep it running using full choke.

I have run out once when riding alone about six miles from the Casino in Christmas, MI towards Au-Train. Some Boondocker gents gave me a $20 gallon of gas from their carry on tank. Best money ever spent. I stayed with my sled and held out my thumb, almost every sledder stopped which says a great deal about the people in our sport.

Of course it is dumb to run out of gas, I am guilty.

Had a friend with a Thundercat back in the days [early 90's]. Ran out about 2 miles from Mass City. Easy tow in.

More than once :p With other people, its no big deal as long as you have some type of container. Just tip one sled over and empty out some gas into container. Once ran out of gas boondocking by myself. This was no good! Figured I was getting about 10mpg (gauge didn't work) but it was more like 8mpg and ran out 5 miles from a station. Walked a mile plus out of the woods, called a resort that I frequent and they came and rescued me.

I ran out of gas putting the snowmobile in the trailer. I knew I was low but could not make it up the ramp had to pull it in by hand.

With a combination of Sea and Snow and 87 octane I have never come close to running out of gas. Those are the two critical components..

Running a Yamaha nitro with a 7 gallon tank, I have ran out of gas. Added an extra tank to the back and all good.

I just ran out a couple weeks ago after getting the sled running for the season. About a half mile from the station (station 3 miles from home). Had to ride nuts to butt with my buddy and of course he had to rip wheelies all the way to the pump to get a gas can and wheelies the way back to my sled. What a Richard!

Took a rookie out with us a few years back. Rented a ski doo think is was an mxz sport. Place told him he got like 28 30 mpg which seemed pretty true but he refused to fill up everytine didn't want to spend the extra money well we stopped off at a favorite spot and we played for a long time and guess who ran out not me :) lol my bud did so with all of us except our other friend who has a gas buddy on back of his sled run him back to the gas station mind you our friend weigh oh at least 325 to 350 very big boy. Well needless to say he filled up at every stop no matter what lol.

Ran out in the middle of Lake Vermillion last year on my brand new sled!!!!! Only put on 100 miles so should have had plenty (4 stroke 1200) Sadly I was with three Polaris riding "buddies", so after photo opps etc. they towed me back to town. I have since found that this is a problem with the fuel line installation at the factory. Ride on, Gary

some what out of gas story
when I was about 10 yrs old and on an old MX bike, I was taking a quick ride to cool off one day after some lawn work,
and didn't look to see how much gas was in the tank, went down the local rural road(illegal to do so)
but middle of NO where really, happened all the time
got to an intersection and a local cop seen me and lights came on, being a DUMB kid, I decided to take off and try to get to a wooded trail, about a 100 ft from trail I ran out of gas LOL
and was trying to push the bike into the woods when the cop got me
he didn't fine me, but made a BIG fuss, got my father involved(which was maybe worse than a fine Haha)
BUT after that I never ride without checking how much fuel I have in what ever I am on!
lesson learned on checking fuel!!

Back in in the early 90's, riding a borrowed '85 Yamaha SRV (fan-cooled, I think) with an 8-gallon tank, ran out of gas within sight of the Jackpine, near Manistique. We towed it there only to find their tanks were empty. Oh boy, had to tow it quite a ways to find gas, but riding on the back of my brother's Exciter II was not my idea of a good time. Haven't done that since and don't plan to either.

Here is a simple solution if you run out of gas and are with other sleds. Park the sled with gas on a snowbank so it is higher than the sled out of gas. Remove any type of hose (vent line, etc) and siphon gas. Once it starts flowing, it will flow on its own. I've done this on at least one occasion. The trick is to find a vent hose with enough length. Or, if you are like me, I carry 3 feet of gas line with me for just an occasion.

if you can get a buddy to sit on the back most fuel pickups are at the back of the tank. also if you rock the tank side to side there is a low spot in the tank for water and crap you can get the fuel out of.

Reminds me. On Rev XPs if you put weight on rear bumper you can get nearly another gal in the tank. Lots of trapped air. Would probably work on other models as tanks these days are weird shapes.

My '06 MXZ is like that. Fill it to the top, then bounce the tail end a little and it will take nearly another gallon. Sweet!

Yep. All of the Doo Rev's are like that.
