Ran out of Gas

Several years ago, we had a group of about 12 guys and we were all running low on gas. We had come up 107 from the south and decided to head to Sidnaw for gas as it was closer than Bruce Crossing. We get to the gas station in Sidnaw and they had just run out of gas and the transport wouldn't be there for hours yet. We decided to head back to Bruce Crossing and the 800's started to run out first. It took us forever to get there as the 500's and 600's had to keep filling up the 800's. It was no fun at all!

gave a ride to a guy that ran out last Feb. He was in a group of three rentals coming from Munising, found them about 2 miles from pine stump. He said they handy gotten gas all day.

I was riding through the forest preserves in N. Illinois one day and there was a guy walking with a brand new gas can that flagged me down and asked if "I had seen anybody towing a Polaris out of here" I said no I haven't sorry. Talk about a bad day getting worse ...some people.

We had a buddy run out on his Ski-Doo, we had some tubing but we all sucked a mouthful of fuel but couldn't get the gravity to work. Thought the sled with fuel was higher on the bank but apparently not. This same buddy got the siphon kit for Christmas which we will carry and hopefully not need. We're pretty good about filling up in the am and planning our routes that get us to the next gas point with hopefully not less than 1/4 tank left. Towing sleds and getting fuel in the mouth is no fun, lesson learned and hopefully never repeated.

Funny, most of us have paid our $5-10 a gallon of gas from another well prepared sledder:)

No need to get fuel in your mouth. Even without a siphon kit. If you put the siphon hose in the tank as much as possible, put your thumb over the end. Then pull it out till fuel in line is over the top of the tank enough to pull a siphon. If the bottom is still in fuel it should flow.
A lot of times it's easier to put fuel in a quart at a time. (Empty your quart oil into your oil tank use that container). Than it is to get a sled high enough to siphon directly into empty tank.

Only ha 2 people run out of gas while riding. Back in the day a buddy ran out in his '80 5500 Blizzard. Had to tow him several miles double up on my '83 trail Indy. He weighed about 240. Made it to Baurs dam at just after closing time. Lucky some one was still there to let us fill up so we could get back to Arbor Vita.
