Recommendation For New Vacuum Cleaner?

The old Simplicity vacuum smoked the motor today but served us well over 14 years so time to get a new one.We have 3 levels of mostly light colored carpet, 2 carpeted stairways of 14 steps each & probably about 1200 square feet per floor 80%, carpet 20% ceramic tile. The carpeted stairs are a PITA to do & we need quick change from carpet to ceramic tile. The lighter the better especially when vacuuming stairs. Price is not an issue and willing to pay for a quality vacuum cleaner. So what it best??

I am ashamed to actually comment on this...

Dyson.

Don't waste your time or money on anything else if you want the best.

Hope this doesn't turn into a poo vs doo thread....haha
Wait, maybe I do....

Ditto the above. Have had mine for 10 trouble-free years and it's nothing short of fantastic. They're definitely not inexpensive but if price isn't an issue, then look no further.

As sort of an alternate viewpoint, I own a motel and have 5 vaccums. I buy the cheap ones at WalMart for about $65, they are Bissel. Use them everyday, they last for several years, when they break I toss them out

We have a dyson my brother has a kirby, Dyson works great Kirby works great if you do not have to take it up stairs I think the Kirby may be better for cleaning his has a power drive system on the wheels works well. We like our dyson we have pets and tons of hair in vacuum 3-4 times a week and empty the can after each cleaning so that works really slick. Just got a Free Dyson from a friend who said it pushed to hard cleaned up the sticky stuff on the bottom of it scrubbed it down and works great now we have one for each floor
I think either one would be a great choice
Let your wife pick and dislike which ever one she gets then you have an excuse not to use it

Exactly.
4 years ago I bought a new one.... took a look at a Dyson and laughed at the $500 sticker price. Yah ok I'm gonna pay $500 for a vaccuumn. I don't live in the damn White House. Bought a Hoover then for under a hunge and it's still ruunning just fine. And when it dies i'll buy another $80 Hoover.

Sounds like you need to upgrade your flooring to tile and hardwood. EPA is cracking down on coal emissions, and those electric vacuums are doing nothing but creating smog.

Surprised no comments on Shark Vacuums? My bud said Dyson & Hoovers came back all the time at Home Depot but peeps with Sharks luved them & he never saw a Shark come back. I watched Shark vs Dyson on TV today & Shark is looking good but woul like to hear from a real user.

Supposedly, Home Depot sells cheaper versions of things (grills, mowers, etc.) than are found elsewhere. If that's true, maybe it applies to vacuums as well? Don't know, just a thought. All I know is we've had our Dyson (purchased elsewhere) for 10 years and it has functioned without a hiccup.

Two schools of thought here, buy the cheap ones and replace every few years or take the plunge and buy the best. We had a number of the cheap ones and now have a Dyson.

You pay a little more for the etec or 4 Stroke models :)

We have 2 Dysons and they work good. My wife hit something with one of them and a big piece broke off. They took it back and fixed for free, even paid the postage both ways. We'll stick with Dyson.

Rainbow is also a really good one, but way to much money.
