Nobody has mentioned the Munising Area (Wetmore)yet .They get lake effect snow and have a good trail system well taken care of. Plenty of motels with pools and hot tubs, lots of eating places, different resturants, casino, etc. You can even get to the Casino in Marquette. Which is a good days ride with a unique sculpture park on the way. Travel distance from Chicago is about the same as getting to Watersmeet,Mi.

My office is at KARR overlooking 9/27

6-1/2 hrs to KLNL.

I recommend Gateway-lodge.com. Historic Lodge with 6' fireplace, great little bar to relax, pool, Hot Tub and the Land O Lakes area has some of the best food in the Northwoods.

If snow a little low trailer north 40 minutes to Mass for the day.

Stay at the Casino in Watersmeet,Mi. Nice place, price is excellent. Snowmobiler special 3 nights $39.99 a night. They give you money to play thier machines each night, coupons for a free beer every night, and food coupons every night. Stayed there last week, very pleased with trail location. We went in every direction with no issues. Good centrally located place in my opinion.

We are taking our wifes and have for the past 5 years. Stay in the lake gogebic area, more to see and several different restaurants. My suggestion, stay at the Root Cellar they have nice clean accommodations, great restaurant, and right on the trail. Mass City and the other areas north don't offer as much as the Gogebic area. Plus they have a ton of snow !(LES) Happy Trails

I agree. Plus they just built a brand new 2-story condo unit. It's priced from $99 to $189 per night?? depending on the unit.

Couple options come to mind that are more "wife friendly". I agree with the Parkview in Twin Lakes as an option. You could stay there, and take an overnight trip to the Mariner North in Copper Harbor. She'll like the view from Brockway Mt overlooking CH. Stay there and head back the next day.
If she's not the type that will put on 150 miles a day, make Houghton/Hancock your home base. You can go north or south out of Houghton. Also if you are not going to be putting in terribly long days, having a home base in Houghton will allow you to go out for dinner/drinks and have plenty of options. The Ramada in Hancock is a good place, modern hotel feeling. I've stayed at the TravelLodge in Houghton, not bad. A little older than the Ramada, but bars/restaurants are within a short walk, like the Library, Ambassador, Douglas Inn, Keewenaw Brewing Co, and others. Houghton would get you the miles you're looking for, and allow you to get your wife some creature comforts. And you'll have options for Valentines day, if you're looking for them. Just my $.02.
Just remember for the most part women think a little differantly than a guy. She will want to be able to relax at the end of the day. When she says a hottub would be nice that usally means it better have one. While the Parkview to me is a awesome spot your nite time is kinda limited to there. Anywhere else and you're driving. If you stay in the Houghton/Hancock area your options for nite life are almost endless. I have stayed at the Travelodge and was not to impressed, I understand it's fairly new owners and they are trying to improve that. While I have never stayed at the Ramada I have talked to many people who have and never heard anything negative. I have always stayed at the BestWestern in Hancock and always been treated well. There are also many good places to eat and drink within a fairly short walking distance. Have a good time wherever you stay the snow should be great,I see John has maybe another 24 inches maybe by that weekend.

One down side to being in Watersmeet right now is that most of the deeper snow is north of there. Things in northern Wisco & the southern Yoop are a bit thin.

That said, you're only 20 or 30 miles from the good stuff.

We're staying at the casino late this month so I hope they pick up some fresh.

Try the Konteka In White Pine. Its about 7 miles from Lake superior. It has a lodge, Bar, Restuarant, bowling ally, and sauna and hot tub. Very nice people that own and work there.

I would suggest the Ramada in Hancock if you want to impress the wife, and if you want her to come back again. We have stayed there a few times. It is a nice clean place, with a good bar, good food in the restaurant, and a nice view of the lift bridge. There a many good options in the U.P., for what it's worth, my opinion is that this is one of your best options if you are with the wife. Just my opinion.

Well, once again, everyone had great suggestions. Due to alot of places not being available (Valentine's weekend, snow coming, husband too slow making reservations...) we ended up getting a room at the Travelodge in Hancock (everywhere else was full) and actually got their last room. This is the big test for the wife as to whether she will enjoy sledding or not, so...Up Friday afternoon, sledding all day Saturday and perhaps Friday nite and Sunday morning!

Thanks everyone AGAIN for your help...there were so many personal messages, and offers that I can't possibly thank everyone!
