We have a couple of these jerks invading camp. Some how they are getting into cabin, have set live traps to no avail. One was in the pine tree that hangs over garage tried to get it with 45 but no luck & out of 22 ammo. So how do the locals keep them at bay? Last time up we found about 100 green pine cones stuffed under one of the couches.

I used a poison that had a corn base. It kept them at bay,but didn't get rid of them. A few years ago a Pine Martin moved into my crawl. There isn't a vermin within eye site of my camp. I give that little guy free reign.

Good luck is all I gotta say seems like poison is the best bet. Try looking up some ideas on Google. Sounds like lame advice but mixing it into something that u see then hiding and then putting it into a common area they go to might have an effect. Good luck! Local dnr might have some good advice as well.

Last summer I had a chipmunk problem in my backyard and used giant mousetraps purchased at Menards. I then put peanut butter on the appropriate area and killed many chipmunks and a few squirrels that meandered over.

Those reds are real trouble, they chewed our electrical wire in the garage and chewed holes in the life jackets. I know your out of .22 ammo, but thats the best way I found. We shoot over twenty a summer with .22 bird shot and so far thats worked the best for us. Because its a cabin we are't up there to keep checking traps. I also tried Rat pellets but only ended up finding them in my tool drawers.

If you have a food source outside (bird feeders, etc), remove it for awhile and start killing them.

Poisons could backfire on you, if you bring pets out to camp. They will sometimes find the dead squirrels before you do.

I get them in my wood crib. I like it when Mr. Weasel starts patrolling my wood crib - makes me all warm and smiley inside.:D

I have had good hunting with the live traps.
What is your problem?
How do the rodents avoid the traps?
A friend of mine caught one at his house, he decided to spray paint it orange.
We drove it 4 miles away, over a stream, and let it go.
The squirrel showed up again about 3 days later.

I dropped them off in the city, where they live on the dole.

sounds to me like some one needs to start breading Weasel's /pine martin for resale to cabin owners . my guess is a ez 150 or more per vermin hunter.

Hmmm, breaded weasel … I couldn't find a recipe for weasel; maybe I could adapt a breaded chicken recipe?
(Have I've been watching too many of those Alaskan Reality TV shows, like "Alaska: The Last Frontier", "Alaskan Bush People" and such?) [Note, I'm not critiquing ezra's post, but he got me just lickin' my lips and searchin' for recipes!] ;)

Do you think some breaded weasel would work as bait for those nasty red squirrels?

Cant even count the number of them I take out yearly. Its a non stop battle. .410 is my tool of choice.
Poison just seems so wrong to me. Most likely it will impact more than the squirrels.

Since we are talking squirrels, anybody know how to get rid of flying squirrels? They are living in my roof, but I do not have an attic. I been using rat traps but they out smarted them. Any ideas how to get these damn things out of my roof?

They are nocturnal so they should be in your attic during daylight hours. Do you have bird feeders? If so, you may have to get rid of them as squirrels of any kind love the snacks.

In Green Bay, WI they are coveted as they are fairly rare. I took some pics a few years back and emailed them to the County Conservationist. They came out and visited me as they were interested in habitat etc., I have Pine trees galore and the F.S. was going from tree to tree, pretty cool.

I only had them for about six months from May-October in 2013 then have not seen them again. I guess that does not mean they are not present though.

They are cute but they are destroying my house, as you can hear them chewing on the truss's, we called the DNR and they didn't want to deal with it so now its up to me to deal with it. We have no bird feeders. We have pine trees close to the house and they jump to those, I been bomb dived a few times by them.

Go on Amazon and search for squirrel poison. It looks just like giant mouse poison. Put it in bowls everywhere. I had a family of those things in my cabin for years and they were destroying everything. Shredded pine cones and squirrel poop everywhere. Plus ate a bunch of decorations. Like you, the traps did nothing.

Did you hang the bait from trees? The thing with bait is I don't want them dieing in my roof and have to put up with smell and rotting carcass.

We had smell from mice. We must have had mice die in the walls of our house. Was told to put charcoal briquettes in the center of newspaper and pull up the four corners and twist/scrunch together. Place 2 in each room with worse smell. Took care of it in a day or two. Then we left there for like a month till we figured smell wouldn't return.
