Refinishing Aftermarket Wheels

Hey all,

I have 17" wheels that look good, but have curb rash and some scratches. The paint is bubbling in a few places also. I have the stock wheels with winter tires on them so time is not a issue. I have all winter to finish them.

I have done a bit of googling and found little information on DIY refinishing kits. Most of my findings have been places far away from home and I preffer not to spend the money on shipping. Whether or not I sand blast them and what I do with them after sand blasting is what im asking.

I believe the wheels are aluminum and have been painted before. I need to know if I can get away with having them sand blasted locally and repaint them my self, or if I need to have them repainted by a professional?

My Father sand blasted and painted a set of aluminum wheels long time ago for his conversion van. I believe he used an apoxy primer/paint, and then clear coated them. He always said the turned out nice and where super durable. This was 20 some years ago and he also had his own paint shop to work in at his van business. Good luck!!!

I got a pair of aluminum wheels out of a junkyard for my Accord last year so I could have winter tires to just swap out as needed.

The old man and I sand blasted them clean, and spray painted them ourselves. Quite honestly I think they look better than the original coating that was on them.

Its all about what you want. Do you want a 10" paint job or a 10' paint job. (The distances noted are how far back you can stand from the car and be happy with what you have). I'm happy with the 10' paint job.
