A friend of mine just recently bought a snowmobile, It has Illinois registration and a Wi trail pass, the one you can just go buy when you are up there. The Illinois registration is good until 2011 and the Wi pass through the end of the season. He intends on registering it in Wi, but for this season can he just use the Illinois sticker and the Wi trail pass?. He said he has 15 days in Illinois to transfer, but don't want to if gonna register in Wi. Also can he use thr Wi trail pass that was already bought, I know in Mich when I get one I have had to fill out paperwork with my info, not usre if Wi makes you do that (would have old owner info) Or should he just register in Wi now? Thanks always have registered mine in Wi so Im not sure what he should do.

Sure if he doesn't want insurance or proper registration he can get away with it.

(I suggest liability insurance at the least)
Il registration to change cost 18 bux for three years plus $35 annual trail sticker.

WI cost ya 30 bux plus ya'lls pay 5% sales tax plus stadium tax based on county on yer purchase price of the sled from a private party.

If he doesn't plan on registering it in IL, then I wouldn't bother with the transfer here. That being said- what is the WI law on time limit to register a snowmobile? I'm not sure on that one. The WI trail sticker is definitely valid for that machine. The stickers aren't tied to specific drivers/sleds, etc. If you have one on your machine, you are good to go. So if he sees a DNR and they're just checking for those, he'll probably be just fine for the rest of this year. BUT if he gets stopped for another reason, and that registration is not valid- he could get a ticket for that. My opinion- for the extra $30 or whatever to register, is it really worth it? I don't think so. I want to be able to hand all of my stuff to DNR and be on my way- no worries. As for paying the tax- if registering in WI, you'll have to do that whether you register it now, or next year- so there's really no 'gain' in waiting. Only a loss if you get pinched w/ invalid registration.

WI gives ya 10 days for the registration transfer and tax payment...

This is all good unless he lives in sconney then he'll only hafta register it there and the trail pass isn't valid for residents...
