I had heard that if you sell a registered vehicle (this case a snowmobile) to a family member that you do not have to pay taxes on it. is this true?

It depends on what kind of relative.

From the WI snowmobile application form;

i am not a tax lawyer but i believe when you trade or sell a car or snowmobile original payer gets credit for tax paid on new sale amount. this can be accomplished by deducting trade in price from new at dealership or provision on tax return.
also, when buying taxed road gas you can get credit for off road gas use of boat or sled or atv. it is not illegal to avoid taxes.

I just purchased a UTV from private party in Wi and registered it in MN and had to pay no tax, just a whopping $64.00 registration fee. I liked it!

I bought a new Sled last January on a Trip and Payed Wi Taxes and registration on it. Now I want to Register in Illinois, last time I did this they wanted me to pay the difference in Tax between WI and Illinois.

Just the opposite here. Bought in MN and paid 6.8% tax there. Registered in WI. where I should pay 5.1%. Never bothered filling out the tax difference refund form.

That's correct. This happened with a trailer I bought in Wisconsin and Illinois would not let me license it until I paid the whopping $5 difference.

Been trying to contact the Illinois DNR for days now, their phones are not set up to wait, just says we are open for questions Tuesday - thru Thursday for questions, please call back . What a Crock of @#$%&* .

Also tried emailing asking my question and got this back, please talk to Dept of Revenue.

Guess I will go to the Local Secretary of State office and see what they :(

Illinois is awful to register in. I bought new in February in Wisconsin paid the tax and registered it also. I will send my Illinois registration in December and just carry a copy of what I sent in. Usually it gets sent back by March so it works for me if Illinois ever gets snow to ride on.

It IS a Department of Revenue issue. If I can recall, there is a form to fill out. That will tell you what you owe. Send that in, and that receipt will get you your registration approved.

Here you go. These are instructions for the form that you can get at a currency exchange. These are JUST the instructions.

That is what I decided to do and next year when my Wisconsin registration has expired, I will register in Illinois. Odd are I will never ride in Illinois, I haven't for over 10 years, used to go out to the chain of lakes , but my buddies have been checked almost every time they go out their for Registration, Insurance, etc ...
