Remove or Repair Airbags

Gary- Guilty as charged. My opinion was strong and overstated. I got your attention, which is what i wanted to do. Please, I implore you, do not send your child out in a car with no airbags.

gary, if you decide not to replace the air bags, then you drive it and give the kid your car.

In our camp we have a 94 toyota corolla. Very small car, in fact when I'm on the highway the semi's tires are at my shoulder height. It has bags but is by far the most vunerable car we own. " I " drive it back n forth to work, great city milage 27mpg.
We don't want our kids driving it due to the chance of mishap.
For my wife & I , our family is our most prized possession.
Protecting our kids ..... " Priceless ".

That is what we are about.

I would start by Craigslist it as is open offers or trades and see what pops.
I don't know if I would toss any cash in to a 99

Well the decision was made. If we were going to repair the car, we would do the air bags too. Now the question became do we put that much money into it.

Knowing the air bags would be 2 grand, body and engine parts would be about 800 not counting paint and the other mechanical stuff that needed to be done before was 700 I was looking at $3500 total to have it back to good and safe condition. If I junked it was looking at getting $300.

So I did exactly was ezra suggested on the very first reply to this thread and put it on Craigslist at $1000 as is. Sold it in 20 hours for $850! Made sure the guy signed a "as is where is" bill of sale that also stated the air bags were not functioning and releasing me from all liability and future claims.

Happiest time of my weekend watching him drive it away (yes he drove it) with the cash in my pocket and a piece of paper that said ALL SALES FINAL!

Thanks everyone for the comments, advice and suggestions. Looking at an SUV for the kid now, just in case he didn't learn from this accident :)

Just completed the saga...

Found an 01 Ford Explorer Sport in good shape, 140k miles that drives well and has been correctly maintained. Well within the budget, in fact we can put tires on it and still have a little room in the budget if it ends up needing something else. Told him this is the last time we do this, now that his Cross Country season is almost over, he's out looking for a job and we've already agreed there will be a wage garnishment program put in place to cover the cost of the replacement vehicle when he starts working.

Hopefully this will work well for him, 4WD, dual airbags, no fancy stereo, and only 2 doors so its a pain to get into the back seat which I'm hoping will result in fewer passengers, and less back seat activity too!

Who knows, maybe we'll drive it on one of the trips to the UP this season!

Funny on the news last night they had a story about air bags that are bogus. They go off and start on fire and metal flying all over the place. They came from China or Mexico. They said if you have had air bags replaced in the last three years to get them checked out. Story was on channel 7 news yesterday,10-10-12. in the Chicago land area.

Well played, Gary! Great solution!

dcsnomo, funny thing is the person we ended up buying it from is in your neck of the woods. She was a retired principle who lives in Ephrim. Her son lives in Madison and did all the work, but the title listed her address.
