u pay the tax in the state u live..
I've bought a number of sleds from both private parties and dealers. I've never paid tax to anyone (dealer or private) who is out of Illinois. The dealer should only collect tax if you are registering the sled in the state he is selling it to you in. If you buy a sled from a MI dealer and bring it back to IN, or register it in WI, he should not charge you MI tax, but you'll have to pay it when you register it.
I'm not getting into a back and forth, or calling anyone out here, but I have bought 5 sleds from dealers in MI and NEVER paid MI tax. I picked up every sled at the dealer, said I was registering it in a different state (one was in IL, the others in WI) and I walked out the door with a receipt in hand and paid no tax.
If those dealers did something wrong, I can't say, but that seems to be the standard practice and they sell a lot of sleds to people from all over.
Agree. All I know is I bought a sled last Sept. from a dealer in the Yoop and I am a WI resident who is registered the sled in WI. I tried to not pay tax to the dealer in MI, but was told by law they have to collect tax. I was told the same thing from dealer in Duluth, MN as well as a couple out west. Not sure what the correct answer is but that was my experience. When I registered in WI I showed the DNR I paid tax in MI and was not charged any tax in WI.
