If you buy a used sled from a dealer in MI or WI, does the dealer collect the sales tax or is that the buyer's responsibility, similar to if you bought from a private party?

For Michigan residents, Mich dealer collects tax (law) if you are Mich resident. If you buy in Wis as a Mich resident, you have to pay tax in Mich when you get the title transfer at SOS office.

u pay the tax in the state u live..

Last sled I bought, I bought in Indiana, where I live, but I registered it in Wisconsin, where I store it sometimes, so I paid sales tax there. But that was private party. I was just wondering if you buy from a dealer in WI or MI, does the dealer collect it or do you have to handle it separately with the state?

I am a WI resident and bought my last sled from a dealer in MI. I had to pay the tax to the dealer in MI. I also would have had to do the same if I bought a sled in MN. It is state by state. I just know how it is handled if a WI resident buys sled in MI or MN.

I've bought a number of sleds from both private parties and dealers. I've never paid tax to anyone (dealer or private) who is out of Illinois. The dealer should only collect tax if you are registering the sled in the state he is selling it to you in. If you buy a sled from a MI dealer and bring it back to IN, or register it in WI, he should not charge you MI tax, but you'll have to pay it when you register it.

You pay the tax to the state in which you purchased the item from a dealer... Then if you register in another state then you pay only the difference in tax to the state you registered in vs purchased state tax charged only if its greater %...

I agree thats what happened to me. Bought it MN and registered in WI. Had to show the receipt with tax charged. MN is a lot higher then WI.

Bought a new sled and a used sled in Mi,and live in IL. Paid the taxes when I registered them in Mi. You just need the bill of sale to pay the taxes. A bud bought a used sled in Mi,lives in IL,and registered and paid the Taxes in Wi. IL hates this but can't do anything about it unless you ride the sled in IL. Not riding in IL isn't hard to do.

WRONG----Only way MI dealer does not have to charge sales tax is if he "delivers" the sled out of state.

I'm not getting into a back and forth, or calling anyone out here, but I have bought 5 sleds from dealers in MI and NEVER paid MI tax. I picked up every sled at the dealer, said I was registering it in a different state (one was in IL, the others in WI) and I walked out the door with a receipt in hand and paid no tax.

If those dealers did something wrong, I can't say, but that seems to be the standard practice and they sell a lot of sleds to people from all over.

The MI dealer has to prove to the SOS he sold it to a resident of another state. He does that by photo-coping the customers driver license as proof of purchasers residence. Most states share this information so as to collect all taxes due.

All I know is I bought a sled last Sept. from a dealer in the Yoop and I am a WI resident who is registered the sled in WI. I tried to not pay tax to the dealer in MI, but was told by law they have to collect tax. I was told the same thing from dealer in Duluth, MN as well as a couple out west. Not sure what the correct answer is but that was my experience. When I registered in WI I showed the DNR I paid tax in MI and was not charged any tax in WI.

Agree.
Only have experence buying in MN while living in WI.
Prior to around 2006 I was able to buy sleds in MN and resell in WI without taxes ruining the profit margin.
