seepage from jackshaft

95 XLT SP. just going through it getting it ready for winter. Added some chaincase lube after seeing it was low and it started dripping out the tunnel side of the chaincase. Will it flow out of this area if it gets overfilled? I thought maybe the seal was bad but saw on a post online that if overfilled it can run out here. I will double check the stick to see where the level is at after it sits for a bit, couldnt tell right away after filling. I probably only put about 2oz in as it was below the "safe" mark but I guess it could of been too much.

you shouldn't just add some, you should drain it and add all new. Either your seal is bad, or a crack in your cover or housing.

thanks for the replies, sounds like I'm gonna order up some new seals and do the bearing while I am at it.

Check the opposite side (speedo) bearing while it's apart.

In fact, if there's 3000 miles or anywhere near it, I'd replace them both.

"ALL BALLS" Sells the complete kit to do 1 axle, 2 bearings, seal, etc. only $22.50

bearings

speedo cable is broke on my 2000 600 classic, was told bearing could be going bad and causing that, does any one know if that would cause the cable to break and how big of job to replace the bearing?

how do you know the speedo cable broke? Did your speedo stop working and you assume the cable broke? What happens, is the bearing goes to crap, causing the driveshaft to not spin as smoothly, causing the speedo key (not the cable) to break and your speedo stops working. Everybody seems to think it's their speedo cable, all it is, is the bearing. It's a good thing this is how it's designed, because if not, then how would one know their bearing is shot? then when riding on a sled with a bad bearing, it causes BAD problems.

Yes that would indicate your bearing is shot. Like Indy said just a key way. Not a big job.....if you know what you are doing.

Not true if the speedo stops working. My buddies 01 pol. 600 stopped working 2 different times and even after the bearing was replaced it did it again, so we replaced the angle drive, and that fixed the problem. Take the angel drive off and place it in the freezer overnight and then see if it turns real hard. The angels drives sometimes get moisture in them that you just can't get out, Then you'll also be able to inspect the bearing when the angle drive is off. Let it snow!

But that is typicaly an indication of bearing failure. First thing to check.

take the angel drive off. rotate shaft and inspect bearing and if it looks good and feels good put the angel drive in the freezer. simple as that

The bearing could look ok, but the key that runs from driveshaft to the angle drive usually snaps causing it to not work.
