Seney/Curtis area

Looking to head to this area weekend of Jan. 17th. Is there still trees down in this area hindering the trails? I know a few weeks ago a buddy ran into a lot of trees on the trails and had to turn around. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Seney trails are cleared and in good shape. Curtis trails are closed right now due to large water holes and probably also trees down because it is too wet to get in and clear them.

Hey snopro7, Trees are all cleared, Your trip is 10 days away, lots can happen by then, every thing should be in pretty good condition unless we get rain or a warm up. I just ended a 2 day 512 mile ride in the Seney, Grand Marais , Pine Stump, Munising, Wetmore, Shingleton, Chatham, Eben, Little lake , Marquette areas, all very good except about 30 miles on trail 8 between Gwinn and the turn off to Ishpeming, By the condition of it, I do not think it has been groomed this season yet. Once we got into the Marquette 321 to 417 trail system, these were better than I have ever seen in that area, flat and fast. The snow was a bit thin in Gwinn but it usually is, Curtis swamps are trying to freeze, Curtis did groom some last night but not sure if all Curtis trails are passable yet. Seney was excellent as usual and the new 440 is awesome. Grand Marais excellent, TASA Pine Stump area, excellent condition. more snow expected for tonight thru Thursday 1/9 and Sunday 1/12 thru Thursday 1/16. Lets hope we get a good dumping. Ride safe.

Thanks for all of the updates! Trying to get a feel for the area as places are starting to book up for that weekend. Have rooms at casino in Watersmeet, but looking for somewhere different to ride than our usual spots.

We are heading to wetmore Wednesday for 4 nights. . Conditions should be ideal by then. Going to ride to gwinn and up to east of marquette and back to munising on Thursday i think. Never ridden that route as we usually stay in grand marais or curtis areas. And don’t usually ride much west of munising.

If you head towards Marquette make sure you stop off at the “look out” that looks out over Marquette !!

Here’s a better description someone posted on how to get to the “look out”

If you take trail 8 towards Marquette and then get on 417 it runs right along the lake shore. Just before you get to Marquette you will be on a hi ridge and you can pull over and walk up a short hill about 50 yards and overlook Marquette. The Brownstone Inn is right on trail 417 about 30 miles West of Munising. Once you are closer to the West side of Munising you will intersect trail 8. If you go South and then East on 7/8 and then take trail 7 South you can go down to the Buckhorn which is a great place to eat. http://www.buckhornresort.com/ Like was posted above the Big Bay loop is good also. If you go up there make sure you stop at the Thunder Bay Inn it was built by Henry Ford in 1944.

Thanks for the info. I have been to the buckhorn many times. I think we will leave wetmore and head to gwinn, then up towards Marquette, then back East to the brownstone and then back to wetmore. The air base at sawyer, can you ride up and see the b52?

Maybe this is what Clintondf is talking about:

FWIW, the old, long abandoned (circa 1960s) NORAD/SAGE blockhouse i still there as well, but it's not much to see:

I never saw that one, but I did manage to get a cooks tour of the one at Luke AFB in Phoenix in the late 1960s, before they shut it down:

How's things up in the Curtis area looking? I'll be there on Wednesday. I'm thinking it's probably in really good shape.
