Separating pipe from muffler (rusted tight)

Hi all,

I'm removing the pipe and muffler from my stock 01 MXZ600X to clean and polish up. They are rusted together at the joint and can't separate them; any suggestions? Should I try heating with torch or try penetrating fluid? I have the complete unit out from the chassis.
Thanks in advance,

I'd try penetrating fluid first. A couple days with a couple different applications. Heat WILL work but you never know, part of the muffler might stick around with the can :)

Good luck!

did that pipe not have a gasket and just slide in to can I think so and if I remember it came with a small tube of permatex to seal it with a new pipe so it could verry well be glued together silicon is a bitch

There is always PB Blaster, 1 of my all time favorites. That and " starting it " like said above will give you heat & back pressure . a good combination I would think. I like the starting it idea.

this a shot in the dark....but we have used CO2 to freeze things that are stuck to break it loose.....i know the availability isn't very good.....just a thought

good advice...

Thanks everyone with the suggestions!
I've blasted the crap out of it with PB, still no luck. I can't start/run it, as I have my suspension out from underneath it (rebuilding the rear shock), but I'll give it a shot once she's back together.

Try heat then cool quickly(water). Do the heat-cool thing 2,3,4 times. I done this on things in the past and it has worked for me. The expansion and contraction cycles seem to help break things loose. If that doesn't work, explosives!
