Should I be concerned about my roof?

Our place on Gogebic has a fairly shallow roof slope, probably about 4/12 with a steel roof. The house is going on 40 years old with a few years of no winter maintenance and (knock on wood) we have never had an issue with the snow load. Given the snow this season what kind of loads do you think we have now? I am assuming my real concern will be if we get heavy rains before much of the snow has melted...

I'd be worried on old construction and that shallow of a pitch. Raking/shoveling the snow off the roof is cheap (or free) when compared to the cost of a collapse.

How deep is the snow? Often metal roof sheds it pretty easy, but yours may not if it's only a 4/12.

I know many people who live in the UP. Many of them with older places, and south of Gogebic (less snow than you have) have shoveled their roof at least one time this year as a precaution.

If you hear it creaking it is feeling the load. I had to rake & shovel roof in southern WI in late 70s or early 80s after 3ea 20+" snow falls in 2 weeks. Glad I did as roofs colasped on other houses & some older homes had crooked & bowed walls during Spring thaw & could not take the load. After the thaw I could see my roof plywood had oil panned allowing some small leakage on attic insulation. Now that snow was all system heavy wet snow not light LES.To me not a big deal to get some of the snow off & March sun is also doing its job on roofs so in the end up to you.

Thanks guys. If I were up there it would have been shoveled by now but I haven't been up since Feb. The few calls I made to have people clear it for me were not successful. Might be time to make a few more calls.

I would help you out but too far away for me to stop by. I bought my roof rake at Menards on sale with many snap on extensions & I have 3 story house. Really not difficult to rake just need to pull down some of the snow not all of it no use damaging the roof material or metal.

I think I found someone very close by to do our roof tomorrow. Thanks for the info and thanks Chevy for the offer of assistance, I owe you a beer.
