Sidewinder on Fire

The turbo gets hot. Side panel on right foot side always hot. There are known problems with oil seal on oil tank on the right side. Looks like fire on that side. Oil on fire it is going to go. At least no humans in pics. Can always get another sled.

Now it's a Yamaha?.....I thought you and others like you said they quit making sleds?????

Which is it ladies?

The Zuke turdo had the same oil line/ exhaust heat issue ( if that IS indeed the winders problem?).....common thing between the Winder and Zuke 1100 is the Cat chassis and TRF build quality.

I have a personal video of a Cat 7000 we came upon burning just like that on UP tr 8....The same Yamaha 1050 cc engine in the Nytro....not so many fires????HMMMM?

Without AC, not much left for Yami. Sad, but true. Majority of today's Yami sales, now in AC chassis. I waited 4 years for the supposed to be coming "new all Yami sled", and then very disappointed, gave up. Sadly so it is.

If you are responding to my post, I'm not sure what your point is? I agree....all the Yamahaters have said this for 4 years now since the joint venture was announced, so when 1 catches fire, why do they now waffle over and call the Winder a Yamaha?....LOL.... you can't make this kind of bassakwards chit up.

Snobuilder; I am not bashing anyone, or sled. I don't hate Yami, or AC. Just expressing how it is, and to my disappointment with Yami. As in how they misled people as to going to produce a "all Yami" new sled. But then ending up with shoe horned YamiCats. That's the way business is done now days. I'm done ranting now. And no offense to you intended. Oh well, I guess we did end up with the Scoot??? We don't want bad attitudes now!!!

Through the years there have been many pics of sleds burning and they have been all different colors. It could be a design issue or it could be something as simple as some cattail fuzz getting someplace it shouldn't be. I bought a Sidewinder this year. It was put together in TRF. I watched it get built. They used a whole bunch of TORX fasteners which I personally hate. I read somewhere that Textron has the rights to TORX so that is the reason. So you have AC assembling the sled - which they designed and built to begin with - with a Yamaha motor with Textron watching over the whole thing. There are numerous heat shields surrounding the turbo. But it still generates a lot of heat. Even when it is 20 below like it has been here lately. There have been reports of oil leaks where the oil tank is mated to the chaincase. This is directly behind the turbo. The fire on the sled in the pics appears to have started on the turbo side. It looks like that to me anyway. Or maybe it was cattail fuzz. They all have their issues. I bought the Sidewinder knowing it was an AC sled with a Yami motor. I thought everybody knew that?????

I owned 5 Apex/RX1s. Without brand bashing I personally am not in any hurry to buy another 'pure' Yamaha sled. Every single new sled has a thing or two or three that could have been done differently but the consumer just has to live with it. A lot of consumers are blindly brand loyal and can forgive a shortcoming here and there. Snowmobiling has always been that way. What else would have we have to talk about during the other nine months of the year?? LOL.

Very well put grub!!! High performance sleds more prone to this due to the power/heat they produce. My wife and I years ago, came across 2 AC sleds burning. It was right where the trail crossed a road, in a remote area between Sidnaw, and Twin Lakes years ago. We learned later that they were intended fires. We suspected such as they both burned at a road crossing. Not AC's fault at all. Have known of several other suspicious fires over the years also.

Was out riding my viper last week and noticed my right foot pretty darn warm. Stopped the sled and notice a bit of a smell. Tipped the sled on the side and saw some of the plastic melted. Also saw oil leaking out. I had the machine brought back to our trailer. I am certain if I would have ran it another 30-50 miles I would have had a fire.

The heat shield broke off and moved. Then it rubbed against the oil line in 2 places and created a leak. Not a good deal.

LOL....don't get riled up folks, just asked why it becomes a Yamaha when it catches fire....if that points to hypocrisy, well that is entertaining to read as well....LOL

Early Viper/Yami/Cats had some fire issues such as yours. I was to believe that they had fixed the problem??? Glad to hear you found it prior to it being on fire. As to snobuilder, I call them Yami/Cats. As they are I think??? No harm, no foul???

I have had 2 Apex's in the last 8 years... 0 issues. This is my last year of my current apex xtx and I am still searching for her replacement. Right now the Polaris RMK assault 155 or the switchback assault 144 seems to tickle me depending on if I can get that 155 skid/track to trail nicely. We want to venture off trail more so either will do.

Textron and Yamaha will never mix well IMO, until that gets sorted my dollars will be going to Polaris or Skidoo.
