Your 1/2 can handle the load with air bags, which are affordable and somewhat easy to install. I bolt mine through the bed to the frame. Its not going anywhere, besides clamps over the skis, I made metal bracket that runs through the rails and attached to end of the deck, Sleds are not coming through my back window if there was an accident. Something else might tweek or bend up, atleast peeps in the back seat should be safe from sleds...But ezra has a good point!! I run a 350 1 ton with a Steel Deck.

2 sleds minn 1000lbs alloy deck min 300 gear for 2 guys 100 lbs 2 men 350
1750 minimum
1000 capacity
=
750 over and yes insurance can and will contest a pay out if overloaded and they will win

bags or not the tag on the door is the determining factor in the eyes of the law

Like ezra is saying, illegal is illegal, weather or not you run bags. Its amazing to me how many people overload their truck and don't think twice about it. I think we've all done it, but the fun stops when you get in an accident. Insurance won't pay and Johnny law will throw the book at you!

Lots of discussion about this on snowest. Consensus seems to be that 1/2 ton truck too small for 2 sleds.

On the other hand Isn't the payload more than 1000 lbs for the newer trucks even though they are still referred to as 1/2 ton trucks?

payload is everything not just the bed .I am over all the time on my truck I have bags and use them.
so not trying to play mr cop just stating the risk .
and payload starts as a empty truck now u add gas all your stuff then u and your bud. even with a heavy duty payload package with the 18in wheels u are cutting it close .
and with 2 sleds on the top of the bed it will look over so in the event of a situation u bet your *** it will be put on a scale .
and if u run any kind of advertising on your truck u are done before the wreck. I quit putting my logos on my trucks yrs ago after a fun stop at a freeway entrance by dot .
I was over hauling tile and the list goes on . now no logos and I just drive by and feel sorry for the lawn mowing guys

If anyone thinks those sleds will stay put during a significant wreck, you are mistaken. As a 20 member of a fire department, I've seen what a tool box behind the cab of a pickup truck can do when things come to a sudden stop. Between the motor coming through the firewall and the tool box coming into the cab, the driver didn't have a chance. The box sheared the bolts cleaner than a plasma cutter. Just remember, "things in motion tend to stay in motion".

Haha , look at those tires about ready to blow John.
Guys , who cares wether the sleds are on the truck or on a trailer, in a wreck they will be trashed either way....
If it was me, I wouldn't want sleds sitting right behind my head.
