Snowmobile insurance recommendations

I only carry liability. Its an add on to my umbrella policy and costs $17 per year. I used to carry full covereage through american family. I had one claim back in 1996 for about $3,000 which they were great about. No claims since. I switch to only liability back in 2004 and have not had any incidents since the 1996 incident. I am way ahead monetarily since the $17 covers my Sea Doo's and ATV's as well. I kind of look at it as self insuring on the collision and comprehensive but having liability coverage for when its really needed.

I have had very good pricing and service from Allstate insurance. I started to insure all of my toys when I was quoted $900.00 a year for my sport bike from American Family. Switch all of my sleds that same year when I found out the it would cost me the same for all 5 sleds full coverage as it did for just my one new sled I switched.

Full coverage from Sentry, they had a rep at one of the snow shows a couple of years ago. Currently $190 a year, probably will scale back next year with just liability. No claims. :)

Allstate used to be competitive, but changed their pricing recently and is out of the game. I found State Farm to be competitive, but you have to have your auto's with them. I use AAA. Their snowmobile pricing was a bit high, but as a package with all of my lines they were the most competitive.

One sled, Full coverage with Auto Owners as a rider on my Condo Ins. $100 ded. on comp. $500 on collision. $365 a year. keep in mind all insurance is not created equal. used to pay $185 on a rider on my home. If you rent it is higher, if homeless such as when I lived on my boat this past summer insurance was way way higher. Area and assumed risk by the companies are all factored in. There is no way that I would insure myself for such a low amount considering that I am running a $12,500 sled into the most narly areas on the planet. If the insurance Co. really knew what and where Mountain sleds are ventured into they would not insure them. Most every sled out west has a huge chance of being totalled in just 1 of the 52 weeks in a year.

I have had good luck with progressive. I don't know if they all let you do this, but I add coverage and take down deductibles just when I ride, so I don't pay that much at all.

My buddy is my ins. guy and he has me on Progressive also. I think it is 140 a year, and I have the four wheelers on it also.

Just to add to the original posting by 96xltsp, I know a lot of ins. companies like for you to have other vehicles or a home ins. policy with them but I have found that doesn't always help with a better price on sled ins.

Noticed a few have mentioned they have stand alone policies, which is good to know!

do any of these companys understand the difference in hp between the 4 and 2 stroke? my 09 tz1 is 1100cc 4 stroke rated at about a 600 2 stroke and i paid 420ish for the year full coverage. i think thats pretty darn high for a sled worth under $7000

It would be funny to sit in on some of the claim calls.

So, tell me what happened.

Well, I was at about 10,500 ft., heading over a cornice, heading straight down into about 60" of powder, when this tree appeared right in front on me, so I jumped on one side of the sled wrong foot forward and tried to counter steer....

...wait a minute, you were where? I thought snowmobiles are used on to go around in circles on family farms upstate...

I'm starting to put all my data together and go out to bid my entire insurace package after the first of the year. Based on some comments here I'll be sure to ask to quote both a package rate, and another rate with the sleds as a stand alone item. For you guys that have them seperate from your other insurance do any of you have an umbrella policy? How did that work with the sleds on a different carrier? Does the umbrella carrier even know about your sleds? Seems like my umbrella rate increased with sleds, which makes sense, so I'm wondering what would happen if they were on different carriers.
