Snowmobile Trip Plan

Get some trail maps and start to do some studying! If you are dead set to pack the miles on the U.P. is the place to do it and guys that can ride all day long and play up around the C-Note can pack 300 - 400 on in a day (with good conditions). 200 mile days in the U.P. are fairly easy if the groomer has shown a presence. Keep an eye on the snow fall reports page and start a new post a couple weeks before you leave so people in those area's can keep you up to date on current conditions! I agree that making a solid plan can be disappointing if each goal is not met! Unload and run as hard as you feel fit and stop as needed! Pick some hopeful spots to see and make what you can!

Maybe we can post some single direction day trips that we know are in your route and possible to do in a day.
Example: Marquette to Copper Harbor - Can be done in a day. I do believe depending on route that this is a 200 mile give or take day. Some awesome riding and varying terrain

Totally agree miles can pile up quick with some hard fast riders just running 8AM till 5PM. Still not sure of the size of your group or riding skill but 200 miles is easy in UP? If you have 20-30 riders to coordinate a whole different ballgame to coordinate with chase truck & trailer.

I agree that I would drive a little west farther before unloading. We ride central UP as our main area and we do since very accessible to many areas and pretty safe bet to have snow that time of year. I'd drop in Newberry or so. Do a north east loop to check out tahquamenon falls state park and then head west from there. Pictured rocks shore line and miners castle/falls are a must see. Stop again in Munising (I recommend the BuckHorn Resort). This will be a shorter day of riding, not a 200 mile day, but seeing these sites before heading west to the Keewenaw is my recommendation. Good luck and may you find plenty of white gold!

A big key is the number of people in your group. 4 you can move along pretty good stopping most any place and finding a room during the week. More and it will slow you down and finding accommodation more difficult. I have ridden the U.P. with a saddle bag full of maps, so I could follow the groomer and snow conditions. Making reservations are not my thing, I rather be free to go where the trails are best that day and not have the pressure of being some where specific.

I want to thank all of you that gave me some information on snowmobiling in the UP, I really appreciate it. If anyone would happen to have any trail maps for me, to sort of make some preliminary plan for our trip, this would really help. I will list my mailing address at the end, and in the meantime, think snow.

You are going to need to contact the counties for that & probably cost a couple of bucks per map but well worth the investment.

Paul, I have the UP snowmobile and atv trail map. It covers the entire UP. I'd be glad to mail it to you if you want. You'll be able to plot your entire trip with it I think. Gary

Gary, I would appreciate your sending me that map, it would help us in our plans. In the meantime, I will send a letter to Michigan DNR and see what they can send to me. My home address is listed in my prior post.
Again, thank you for your help.

Hello-I am brand new to this website and hoping to get some help in our planning a snowmobile trip to the UP. I am President of our local snowmobile club here in Pa. and each year we plan weeklong trips to various areas. This trip we would like to come to the UP because of reading many articles in various magazines on how nice the UP is. We are thinking about January 11th thru the 18th and starting somewhere on the eastern end perhaps Sault Ste Marie and then heading west for about 3 days staying somewhere each night and then heading back to Sault Ste Marie on a different route for about 3 days again staying somewhere each night. I contacted John Dee and his suggestion was to post and surely I would get some feedback on where to ride/stay/eat. I would appreciate any help I receive. Think snow !!Paul

try a can of PlastiDip. Comes in a color real close to AC green. Then peal it off when your ready to get rid of the helmet.
I've used it on my truck for protection from salt damage. Very durable and removes easily.

Paul,
Google the Chamber Of Commerce for the towns you will be snowmobiling thru. Then, either email or call them requesting a trail map. I've never had anyone charge me and they are more than willing to assist.
Hope this helps,
LC

Not sure how many miles you look to put on in a day. If it were me I'd stay in the wetmore/munising area first night, houghton area second night, and ishpeming/marquette area third night. Not everyone wants to hear this but last year January 11-18 there was green grass on the ground across the UP. Usually NEVER happens but its possible Started snowing around January 20th last winter and NEVER stopped until late April!
....................More like late May.....Welcome new John Dee'r...like Chords shared i would plan your route in the snowbelt areas to be safe.
