Brothers rescue snowmobilers from icy river

BERGLAND -- Three Alabama men are alive today after a heroic rescue from the icy, slushy waters of Lake Gogebic Monday night.

Names of the three men, ages 46, 47 and 18, had not been released Tuesday afternoon.

They were snowmobiling on Lake Gogebic at the mouth of Snow River when their sleds went through the ice. They were too far out into the river for foot rescue, onlookers said.

Hmmmm somebody please help me out here, I've had a place on the west shore of Lake Gogebic for a decade and I honestly have no idea where Snow River is, perhaps they meant Slate River.

Can anyone tell me where the Snow River meets Lake Gogebic?

Glad to hear the sledders were rescued without injury.

Thanks.

The snowmobilers were very very cold, and wet, but ok. They went in 3' of water/slush on the East end of the bergland bay. They missed the boat landing and continued on toward the dam. Luckly they were on the edge of the river channel which is 7-8' deep. Word of caution. Do not snowmobile east of the Bergland Bay.!! The river channel is very fast and does not form ice over it only slush.

That is west branch of the Ontonagon river, I've never heard it referred to as the snow river before. It seems ever year somebody unfamiliar with the area goes thru the ice on this river, fortunately its shallow.
