Snowmobiling with Kids

My kids are 1 and 3 and we are not ready to give up on the sleding thing yet. does anyone have experience with those trailer pod things that the kids ride in. What age is too young? We tried the whole bring along a baby sitter thing but that has not been working out. we want to take all 4 of us out on the trail. I think my 3 year old would ride on the sled in front of me with one of those 5 point straps, but my 1 year old is too young for that.

Our son has a snow coach that he pulls behind his sled and works great. His kids are 3 and 6 now. Last year was his first year and they were 2 and 5. They would fall asleep in them. We would put on 100 miles a day with the kids in the snow coach. Only way to go with kids.

I guess I was riding at 1.5 I guess I would hold on to the gas cap.and late 60's sleds did not ride very smooth especially considering there was no grooming back then.heck now with all the papoose things to strap the little petri dishes to your body I would say1 is plenty old .

Snowcoaches are awesome!

We brought our kids along all the time in the Snowcoach we had. Both of them fell asleep all the time. They stayed plenty warm and were able to come with us all the time.

Regarding the 5-point strap, a friend of mine takes his daughter out sledding using one of these and it works great. I think she was 4 or 5 when they started using the strap. His daughter really seemed to like it too.

We use the 5 pt. strap for our 4 yr and it works great. Put on 120 + miles regularly with no issues. Our 9 yr started with it when she was 4. When she hit 6 yrs old she started to just hold onto the Mt. strap. Now she rides behind the wife on a 1+1. This is a great way to spent time with you family. Just remember to take your time to really bundle your kids up and know it's about them when they come and you'll be fine!

My freind put car seats in his snow coach for the young ones.Last year my boys were 3 and 4 and the only problem we had when they would ride in front of use on the sleds was that they fell a sleep with in 5 miles and there helmets would bounce around and hit the kill switch all the time.

Like everyone says above the Equinox Snow Coach is by far the best way to continue the sport we all love while taking the whole family with us and I know this from experience as I also had one for my 3 and 4 year olds (now 6 and 8).

I have a few tips though

1) Get the newer Equinox with the gas shocks instead of the leaf springs the ride is like
night and day.

2) Put helmets one the kids. Not just for safety but for the reason that if they fall a sleep they tend to slide over against the door and with a helmet on they are still comfortable and wont wake up.

3) Put the keys in the doors and lock them in so if they do fall asleep you will feel confident that they did not open the door and are now sleeping up against an unlatched door. I put the keys on small bungee cords so I could slip them around the door handle and leave them in the doors in case of an emergency I would not be looking for the keys. When you get to a restaurant you can then lock your stuff inside and remove the key.

4) Lots of blankets for cushion between the kids and against the doors.

You will have a great time with this "space ship" as my kids called it and it gets them into the sport so you wont have to take break from the sport.

Feel free to call me if you have any questions or need any more tips.

Hey thanks for all the great advice, do any of you guys have a snow coach for sale? Also need a bigger trailer and a larger tow vehicle, this sport gets more expensive every day, but we really love it.

Wait till you start buying all of them sleds, bigger trailer yet and larger tow vehicle. Just went through that this year with tow vehicle and trailer.

Yeah I have been trying to convince my wife of the benifits of owning our own cabin up north, but so far.....she wants her new house first. LOL no trailer, cheeper to drive up, faster to drive up, free lodging, increased value of the property. I just wish Cadillac was a little closer to Indianapolis and I think I would have a more convincing argument.

We started our kids in a sno coach when they were 1 1/2 and 3. Strapped in the car seats, strapped in the kids and off we went. Kids would be sleeping back there most of the time. Even went on overnight trips with them that way, we'd just through our bags in the front of the sled. People thought we were nuts!

After 2 years of thet we moved them up front. My son would always fall asleep and I'd be holding him up in front of me. Last year is the first year he didn't fall asleep ever. What a relief!

A powermadd mountain strap was the best purchase for the kids ride'n in front not only for hang'n on but keeps their helmet from hit'n the kill switch when their snooze'n...
