I took a Charter group in to Oshkosh Truck’s Testing grounds this week. Oshkosh is just down the Interstate from us in Neenah, Wisconsin. It’s where they test all the military stuff that they build and I thought these photos were worth sharing as most of us don’t see this kind of thing every day. I should mention that if you hover your cursor over the picture it will be enlarged. I should also mention that they welcomed photos and we're not giving anything away that's not already public knowledge.
The first picture is that of the testing grounds which is about 25 acres of winding trails, mud holes, sink holes, rock piles, hills, and drop-offs. Pretty much every hazard imaginable. Pictured is the vehicle that replaced the Humvee. It’s much more robust and resistant to land mines and it’s the latest and greatest for the military to seek out the bad guys.
This next one is the “mother of all trucks”. It’s a tractor with a 5th Wheel and loaded weighs in at over 50 tons. Notice the small crane and winch above the spare tire. That’s to get the tire down off the frame when they have to change tires. This truck is surprisingly fast and nimble for it’s size.
Same truck, different view.
Here’s another.
Oshkosh builds Cement Mixers and Pierce Fire Engines at another location. They also build Snowblowers like this one...
I was a bit surprised that they allowed pictures of this stuff but only the exterior, no pictures from inside. I guess that was proprietary. Thanks to a generous host, Oshkosh Truck/Defense it was a fun trip to be a part of.
