Anyone ever use steel wool to clean your trailer. SOS pads (steel wool) do a great job of removing oxidation on my aluminum snowmobile trailer but I’m I removing a protective coating or exposing metals that will oxidize more easily?

I would assume that it would rub off any protective coating on there, but that just means you need to put on back on.

I'd try some CLR may take some of the abrashiveness off it also would not hurt to put some kind of wax back on them to protect them look up featherlite trailers and see what they tell you to do to clean it hope this helps abit :)

I used SOS pads on our POS pontoon boat. They really cleaned it up nice but I wasn't worried about any protective coating on that thing.

000 steel wool

That's what I've been using to clean everything from chrome to aluminum. If the base metal is heavy with corrosions, then use a lacquer cleaner[ the cheap stuff, not high performance] along with the 000-0000 steel wool sold at Home Depot or Lowes. A trick a body shop man taught me years ago, makes one look like he knows what he's doing. Good Day.

I did make the switch over to 000 steel wool. I'll have to give the lacquer cleaner a try too. Is lacquer cleaner the same as lacquer thinner?

Muriatic acid if that makes you nervous you can change your skirt and use the Works toilet bowl cleaner witch is basically a mild acid

you should never use steel wool on aluminum. the steel will make the alum oxdize faster because of the two dif metals. use scotch-brite pads will clean the alum .to protec the alum try this stuff call sharkhide. you can get it in boating catalogs

steel wool with kerosene will make it look like new and leaves a protective coat for awhile and will not oxidize. works great on tunnels
