Looking for a place to ride the week before Christmas. Gonna be riding with a couple "professor types" and they expect me to ace the test. Any snow out there?

Going on a quick trip to Seattle this weekend, then I'm home. Must split my time between work, down hilling & snowmobiling.

Black Hills are looking pretty good, They have a lot of snow in the high areas. Might not be enough base for off trail yet, but the trails should be good!

We rode out in Black Hills last year. Great trail system and really had a blast. We stayed at Rec Springs Resort and was a fun place and they have the trail head in their back door. Really nice people and they are extremely friendly.

Looking at heading out to black hills weekend of jan 5th, 2 and a half days of riding is what we are planning, any suggestions on must see things and trails or off trail areas would be greatly appreciated, anyone ever stay in town of lead or deadwood sounds like they have good snow right now

Been there several times. When conditions are right one of the best spots to ride in the country. Great wide trails that are groomed daily. Only about 350 miles in the system but seems like we get sidetracked off trailing so much that hardly get to all the trails. Must see spots are the ride up Spearfish Canyon is awesome! Super restaurant/bar up there as well. Trailshead in center of trail system is the hub for gas/food drinks. They can feed more sledders fast than any place I've ever seen.
Stayed in Lead several times, good easy access to get out to trails. Deadwood can be a little sketchy sometimes as snow gets thinner. Be prepared for lots of traffic on weekends, just like up north. No trail pass to buy is a plus too!

Lots of good info about Black Hills conditions on Snow west forums. Poster sdsnocop is sled patrol guy for the black hills trail system and he posts updates almost everyday.

Anyone stay at terry peak area before?

there are a few rental homes around terry .
they are dirt roads with plenty of hard pack to ride to trail .
as for deadwood question . your dice but not worth it more often than not there is not enough snow to ride in to deadwood . even if good now few days could very well be gone . best staying at rec springs and if snow good ridding down the hill to lead and further down to deadwood .

Thanks for the help, decided to stay at rec springs, found some good homes at terry peak but worried about parking the enclosed trailer , any other can't miss places to see on trail or off trail would be great, we will mainly be riding trail but like a little exploring limited time but still worth it, doing some research sounds like the off trail isa only north of trailshead and on trail from rec springs to trailshead people shoot off in the open areas?

gas , lodging food, and sled rental at Spearfish Canyon Lodge, sled trailhead there, too......

food at Cheyenne Crossing Cafe, the best......

I'm pretty sure there is Gas, food, etc at Deerfield lake as well if you are going on the south trails. Ny understand of the area is that you can ride offtrail just about anywhere you want as long as it is not posted or has closed gates. But, there can be a lot of landmines with stumps and rocks just under the snow until a bigger base gets established, so you should use caution going this early in the season.

Just got back from our first black hills trip and it was awesome, well worth the 9 hour drive, they are in need of some fresh snow as the trails are getting used and thin, but they do an amazing job of grooming and we didn't have a single rough trail, to the south there were a few bare spots where the sun hits the south facing slopes but that's usually the norm anywhere, the trails were still great just could use some new snow on top to help out, we rode 2 full days and a couple hours in the evening on Thursday and ended up putting on 350 miles rode trails, forest service roads and a little powder playing all in all an amazing spot to go with breathtaking views around ever bend, I went with my brother in law, cousin in law and my dad, we stayed at rec springs which is a great location but I hate to say it cause I don't like complaining but they are in need of some better owners/management they have which should be a place packed and lively with conditions like we had and it was not ran well. Another great trip full of great memories and another amazing place I have got to ride with my dad we have rode thousands and thousands of miles together on sleds and it is great to have that I cant wait til my son gets older so I can make them memories with him and show him some of the amazing places I have got to ride with my father.
