My guess with that year & model ( I'm unsure ) your bearing is going bad. Look where you hook it up on the drive shaft / cog shaft. I'm not too familiar with that year SD.

Thats more then likely it...bearing goes bad and takes out the key that drives the speedo...if the key is broke off in the drive shaft you can carefully get it out with a dental pick or even small drill and easy out...Also did you happen to blow a belt lately??? when the belts go sometimes they will put a shock on the cabel and cause that key to break also.
