Spring riding in January!

Who else cant wait to get out and enjoy some spring riding in January? I have always loved spring riding, and cant wait to enjoy the above freezing temps in the UP this weekend. Ample snow depth lets you get out and enjoy the woods and trails, and the warmer temps make it so much nicer to stop, take breaks, and just take in the peacefulness of the snowy woods. Sure, its a shame to see the previously cold, dry, snow pack consolidate, but the season is still young. It should provide an even better base once the cold returns, and it is sure to snow once again in the UP. Dont fret, head up, and take it for what it is.... Spring riding in January!

It's funny you say that, because the past few days, I have been thinking the same exact thing. How wonderful it would be to be out in all the sun, snow and mild temps! Too bad my boss won't give me a day off during the week!

The only sucks thing about spring riding is waiting for morning concrete snow to soften up!

It may be ok for off trail riding, but terrible for trail riding. It will be so warm very little or no grooming will get done for several days. Starting tomorrow, it doesn't get below freezing until Tuesday morning of next week in Bergland. Throw in the rain forecasted for Friday, Saturday Sunday and Monday, you can have it! I do admire your optimism though!! :)

Please keep in mind that this only goes for areas from around Houghton north, as that is all I have been able to check out. It also only goes for conditions right now, but believe it or not, there has been very little melting that has gone on. Some small melting and more settling, but little true snow loss. Thus there is not much of a crust in the woods and the trails have been able to stay in great shape, with low traffic, little melting and re-freezing hard overnight.

I wanted to say something earlier in the week, as it was beautiful weather for on and off trail riding, with the sun and mild temps and great snow. However, it is always a tough call to say when things will start to go south. So far not, but I am pretty confident that will happen by tomorrow at least, with some light rains seen tomorrow-Sunday. Guess it will be the old "should have been here yesterday...fishing was excellent!".

Oh well..... like a lot of others, this was my long weekend to be UP, hope things are better a month from now when I come back, but I'm still going to be there tomorrow! Even with rain and little or no riding, seeing friends in the UP and stopping at all the regular spots, even if its in the truck, is still better than sitting in IL!

Ive been out to lolo 2-3 times in the past 3-4 years. I don't know Don. They have good snow on the pass, so there should be good riding out there still in April. The past two years the pass has not gotten the snow and melted out EARLY.

don and linda stoen ran the fort and rented sleds for years.....and do you remember the old man that sat at the bar everyday.... CHICKEN HAWK?....wonder if he's still alive...I sent him up fish creek road many times towards his cabin and he was so wasted he couldn't even pull the cord or stand up....don't know how he ever survived as long as he has....he truly was a mountainman...I rode wit RED ADAIRs buddy BUSTER also out there....do ya remember BUSTER?

I definitely had my doubts as I drove up through the pouring rain Friday morning all the way to Monico (just south of Three Lakes). The rain and/or temperatures didn't bother me, but I was deathly afraid of everything freezing like cement. To my surprise it was as soft as it could get. Packy but not too packy all day Friday. The rain in the Keweenaw didn't roll in until Late Friday afternoon, and it did rain pretty good, and never got below freezing. Rain was all wrapped up by the time we woke up Saturday morning, and we went out and rode again, snow was slightly more packy, but really didn't lose much at all. Once again, the rain rolled in Saturday evening but a few hours later (it did rain off and on lightly throughout the afternoon, but didn't start steadily raining until later), not nearly as hard as it was Friday night though. All weekend the trails were very rough due to the warm temps and soft snow, (keep in mind I only rode trail 3 between Atlantic Mine and Toivola, typically the roughest stretch in all of the UP as it is the only trail to get to Houghton and north) but there was plentyyy of snow on them. Here's my take on things, they WILL groom, this week it WILL get below freezing at night, so everything WILL firmen up. For trail riding, this is excellent news, along with the bit of fresh snow it sounds like they will receive this week. For off trail riding, I fear it turning cement-like, and to return to current, or should I say pre-thaw conditions, we will need QUITE a bit of freshies on top to be able to start doing any fun technical riding again.. This was one of my most fun trips this year yet, so I hope you guys had fun on your couches whining about the conditions (yeah it's a buzzkill but it's not over, and there was still fun to be had). Here's a little clip of me and The Breeze playing in a steep valley https://youtu.be/zFGWhnEAjpI
