I could never get my sprint Phone to work up in the UP. I think AT+T is the best service up there.I just bought a go phone to take with in Febuary. There was a thread on here about phone coverage and new cell towers going up. I know there's other carriers up there just not what.

Cell Phone Reception

Hello,

I was at the Konteka in White Pine last Thursday and I can attest to no signal on Verizon or AT&T

All the reception you will need a mile and a half out of town down the LP Walsh road. Turn left on LP Walsh or trail 12 go about a mile down and you will see a little shack (utilities phone shack) on the left pull into the driveway after that one and you will have about three bars. I can call out from my driveway but signal does not stay with me to long. I have heard rumour that there will be a tower going up in Silver City very soon.

RANLAM - all I can think about is the dude from Green Acres climbing up that pole to use the phone with Arnold hangin out at the bottom of the pole...still laughing!! (Thanks, tho!)(It also sounds like a secluded spot for an axe murderer to lure his prey!! Oh so sad to crack myself up in my own head!!)

I'm staying in Mohawk when we go up and I talked to the owner Bob and he said AT+t was the best bet.He did say nothing seems to work in copper harbor. I'm sure the reception in the UP is spotty all over the place no matter what phone you have.Matt from the Bluff is an authorized AT+T dealer he could probably help with what carriers there are up there and were reception is best.I got a laugh out of the Green acres and Axe murderer comment.

Thanks again. Problem is not looking to change providers. Have had plan with nextel for so long that sprint can't pull up original - business/family plan - I get to say 'that i-phone looks SWEET' and I get something cool!
If I was lookin to jump ship, would for sure give my business to Matt - good guy and I always recommend his places to people for where to stay.
We do HVAC - have a guy for emergencies when we're not in town - was just hoping to talk to customers first so they can hear my charming voice!?!
Looks like I'll have to Green Acres it and take my chances with ranlam bein there with axe in hand!?!
(I know! Too much info, right!?! ;)

cell service

Verizon put two more towers up in Ontonagon county. So there is pretty good service in southern Ontonagon county. There is also a tower alittle ways out of Bergland. I have never known of Sprint having service up here. There is just pretty much AT&T and Verizon.

Yeah I know you don't want to change service. I got sprint and have had it for a long time also.If you look on there coverage map there not even up in the UP. I used my sprint up there but it was Roaming and that got expensive.I picked up a AT+T go phone for 15.00 dollars and only cost 2.00 a day unlimited. I got kids at home and need something in case of emergency. You can look up sprint maps for coverage areas. GOOD LUCK

yup luvnsnow

Or, I think I just made decision just forward the phone to our emergency guy. Then I can relax and not work!!
Hear ya bout contact with home! When my husb goes up he uses his prepaid card and has to find a phone but that doesn't help me if I wanna cackle at HIM!?
May do the pre-paid thing in case of emergencies...
Own house in White Pine - was just tryin to not get a phone considering we all have cell phones!?
Was just hoping Sprint loved the UP and had a tower!?

If you have even the cheapest of sprint plans and a phone from them in the last 4 or 5 years or so - then you also have free nationwide roaming. Should there not be sprint coverage in that specific area, the phone (if configured to do so) should start roaming automagically and you will continue to receive service. Now - if you are in an area with no service from anyone - then obviously that isn't going to help you out. There are still lots of areas in the UP like that.

OOOOO srobak!

Finally an answer I like!!
Haven't had sprint forever but have had nextel...so mayb should check and make sure. Now that I've made the decision to ditch the work phone being forwarded...let's get to my e-mail and net svs!?! What if I can't come to JD????? ;)
Folks here are gonna start understanding that I have a smart phone because I'm not!?!
Thanks!

Srobak, I did not realize that It's been a couple of years since I used mine Roaming and it got Expensive. The sprint site says that you can only use half of your minutes Roaming after that you get charged.I know we have minutes for non sprint customers but it does not cost anything to call another sprint phone. So would that matter for using minutes if I called another sprint phone while Roaming? If you look at the sprint Roaming map the UP is all analog Roaming not digital.I wonder how this effects The price if it does. Alright now I'm confused. I usually keep the local numbers written down in my wallet sherrif, dnr, hospital, dealers just in case of an emergency on the trail. This and staying some were they don't have phones is the only reason I bring one.

Evo

I have the Evo, it is awesome, really awesome. I have gotten service standing in our driveway in White Pine and also standing in front of the Firehall in White Pine, LOL! Crazy, but that is all that has worked for me in White Pine! I have gotten service in alot of different locations around the U.P. Good luck!

I had service many places I did not in the past this last trip to Mass. A dealer told me its because of my smartphone. Apparently they get better reception because of the way they are built??? Its a tech thing I dont understand all to clearly. I was calling on Verizon at Mass, the Moskito, The Drift In in Ahmeek and had coverage north of Mohawk in my fav gravel pit! Mohawk is a definite stop next time!

Around Ontonagon proper, at&t has the best service. On the fringes (mass, green, white pine, rousssau, etc) it seems to be a dead heat with Verizon and at&t....one might work in a spot, move 10 feet and the other will work. I know Sprint and Nextel are the same company now...I think Nextel is useless in the Yoop...not sure if that means Sprint is too or not.

In those fringe areas, we do see smartphones do a bit better...marginal though. Almost the same affect if you stand on one leg on a full moon....sometimes you just can get a signal in the right place at the right time. New Verizon and at&t stuff going up last year and this coming year, i know at&t is slated to be done by late this year with quite a few.

Since iPhone and Verizon was mentioned, might take a look-see at this http://www.bgr.com/2011/01/10/why-im-not-switching-to-the-verizon-iphone/ . No idea on the validity of the article but I do know that these sort of differences in platforms-etc can make a difference.

What we find...and what we ask customers to do...try a droid phone before you buy an iPhone. Everyone I personally know ends up taking and loving the droid phone. I sell both, so it is not a dig toward the iPhone...it is what we see-hear. I would at least kick the tires before I got one.

another thing to be wary of....claims of 4g service. it does not really exist, at least as defined by international standards. none of the carriers have it, seems they advertise it anyway.

i would save my $$ for now, sounds like real 4g is not even close.
