starting issues

alright i have been trying to get my 96 xlt sp 600 going. i have ripped all 3 carbs off cleaned and put back on. cleaned fuel pump, changed fuel lines, and emptied gas tank and put fresh in. i synced all the carbs so pull at the same time. now this is where it gets fun. depends on who you talk to or read on here rough set-up varies. as of right now needle valve is set in the middle position. air screw is 1 turn out. and idle screw is set 4 turns in. i have messed with air and idle in 1/4 turns either way and still no results. getting frustrated quickly. any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you getting gas to the carbs? Does it turn over with a quick shot of ether? You may have just lost prime in the fuel pump. Don't use ether to much - just enough to see if the engine turns over.

OK, you say you synced the carbs so that they pull evenly, there is a safety switch built in to the throttle assembly that will shut off the ignition if the throttle sticks.

If you do not have the correct amount of free play in the throttle cables the safety thinks that the throttle is stuck and NO SPARK. If you have the kill switch on (not that I ever did that) and you don't have spark loosen the throttle cables on all the carbs a couple of turns and try again.

If you have spark but no gas you said you cleaned the fuel pump what did you do to clean it, if you toke it apart with out rebuilding it you may have damaged the membranes that actually pump the fuel or it did lose its prime. either way pinch off you fuel tank vent line and pressurize your fuel tank (no air compressor) by blowing in the filler opening for a minute or so.

Now see if it will start.

Check for spark, if yes, put some gas down the plug holes and give it a pull. If it fires then you most likely lost the prime. You may have to put gas down the plug holes a few times to prime it. My son's Cat is a pain trying to get it to prime the first time after cleaning the carbs. I have to do it a few times. My guess is the fuel pump is weak on the Cat.

have spark, plugs are wet after a few pulls, so my thought is too much fuel. but not sure how to correct it.

Many a time I think I may have flooded my sled trying to start it the first time after cleaning the carbs as the plugs are wet and it won't start, however I throw gas downthe holes and it fires. Give it a shot. Just put about ounce down each one. Not too much.

if all the advise does not help than pour gas all over the engine, plastics and seat and light er up. Seriously, rp7x said drain the block, it could be full. I seen em full of coolant from bad o-ring or warped head so maybe float stuck. Pull the plugs out and pull the cord 30 times, dry the plugs and try an start. With the plugs out and turning it over much gas can escape the head and clean it out.

This may have been the era of Pol running their carb vent lines up into the padding in the handlebars. Make sure these vent lines are hooked up and not kinked or blocked. If they are not venting all kinds of weird things can happen. Also if there is no slack at all in the throttle cables you might have some throttle safety switch issues that will cut the spark sometimes. There has got to be a little slop in the flipper. Firstly do what the other posters have said and make sure the crankcase is not full of gas. This can be a little bit of a pain because the exhaust manifold might be in the way. However it is a good place to start.
