What a horrible tragedy...definitely giving thoughts and prayers to the families...been trying to warn people to stay off the ice in this area....its just not good.

We were in Tomahawk all last week, we were in the Edge eating dinner, guy with a large group, including a bunch of kids, saying they had a place by the yaught club on lake Minocqua,, and that he did a "test run on the lake" before he took the group WITH KIDS across. I could not believe it..

I'd like to mention two spots on Portage Lake to always be very cautious of. Just West of that spot where a lot of people cross the canal going to the Ramada there is a little navigation marker on a small point of land on the North shore, just don't go there. But the worst is where the Quincy Smelter is( across from the Dee Stadium) is. That area is ALWAYS dangerously thin and there is open water there a month before the rest of the lake opens up. It's just not safe.

Furthermore all of the inland lakes here are dangerous. With a the amount of snow we get here it makes for problematic conditions.
I'm pretty sure most people understand the science of it bu in case you don't know I'll give a layman version. Snow on top of ice makes ithe ice melt. T
Solar radiation easily penetrates the snowpack and reflects off of the ice causing heat to be made and both the ice and snow melts. In example, last year Sandy Lake had three layers of very thin ice, very thin. There was about 10 inches of snow and in under that was a less than 2 inches of ice. Then more layers of slush and ice.

I'm about to walk out and drill a few holes to see where its at now.

So, heres the skinny; test spudded along side of my dock only about half way out because every chop was going right through. The ice has about 6+ inches of snow on it, then about 3 inches of slush. There is, again, 3 layers of ice and slush. One chop with my ice spud and I am through one layer of ice and slush, three chops and I'm through.

Very dangerous.

Is there going to be a test? I hate science.

I don't understand what they were thinking. My daughter has been looking up dates for drag racing, because she just loves doing it. I told her this year might not work. Just because there is snow doesn't mean there is safe ice. She looks at me like I'm crazy so I decided it would just be easier to do an educational trip then argue with her. I took her to Lake Wisota up were The Edge does their drag race every year. As we cross the bridge over the Chippewa River she understood immediately. The ice that's there just looks sick and there's pockets of open water to. She asks what will it take. Answer a lot of cold, or a complete melt and then good cold to form strong ice.

This is one reason I asked if Lake Vermilion was staked on the Minnesota conditions thread. Fortune Bay Casino is the absolute farthest distance with the cows that I could take them to race if there was only one chance they could get in a race all winter. Nothing around us is safe at all.

I'm truly sorry to the families of the two that died, but there is a reason why the lakes aren't staked. Safe riding everyone.

Sandylake is only trying to explain in theory what I had to actually show my kids in truth. I know your just making a joke, but obviously someone doesn't get it if there are 2 dead snowmobilers.

As they say, "There is no fix for stupid"! This idiot should not have children in his custody!

Minocqua had a lot of sled traffic between the bridges... It was not good East of the 51 bridge.

Quite a few tracks on the rum river last weekend in Anoka. If the lakes ain’t safe then how could one justify going out there???
