Still Darts after Shimming Skis What Next?

I ride an 04 800 GSX HO. It has the stock skidoo perscion skis on it. I added a shim of about 1/4" under the rear of the ski rubber. It helped the dartiing some. I cheked the toe in and out it is OK.

What aftermarket ski works well on the Rev? I don't ride real aggressive any more I'm looking for something that handles well on the trails that will steer wells.

Thanks for the input.

How is your toe set? I think you should be toed out 1/8" or so. Ski savers are a good recommendation for single keel skis, but they won't work on the Precisions.

If you're set on trying an aftermarket ski, you may want to consider Slydogs. They're reasonably inexpensive and handle decently without giving your arms a workout.

04 800 GSX HO with precision skis set up right should not dart. What kind of dual carbides? Is center shock preload way soft too much pressure up front?? Precision skis SUCK in deep snow or loose stuff but track very straight on hardpack. Something NOT right in your set up.

I agree, something seems amiss in your set up. Or, Are you following a lot of other sleds that also have precisions skis? If not, tighten your limiter straps and check your toe-out again.

Increased ski preasure increases darting. I find on my sled at slow speed (20-35) it does not dart. At moderate speed (40-55) it darts quite a bit. At cruising speed (60-75) it does not dart at all.

I would think you need to determine your normal speed range and set up your sled for your driving needs. I have my ski preasure very high as I drive faster than some and rarely drive under 70 unless stuck behind a group which causes my sled to dart alot. Keep in mind if you ride with groups and you tend to be in the middle or back of the pack then your sled will dart because it is hunting and getting pulled into the ruts left from the keels on the sleds in front of you.

Don't be afraid to play with the pressures on the skiis. I see so many people that are all over the trail and can't help but think, give me 2 min. and its fixed. You have to determine if its the front moving side to side or the back wiggling around, causing you to have to counter steer it to maintain control. In your case it sounds like the front is going side to side as the skiis search for a groove to follow. I would try to take some pressure off the skiis first. Tighten the pre-load on the center spring a couple notches, and see if it is better or worse. keep making adjustments untill you achieve a good balance between darting controll and steering control. If it goes straight with no darting, but pushes in the corners, you need to get more pressure on the skiis. The tow out should be 1/8 to 1/4" towed out. Also check the A-arm bushings, if they get real sloppy, the steering can be affected. The plastic bushings wear out, the new ones are about $2 each and take about an hour to change. Really helps to tighten things up. Take the weight off the front end (skiis in the air) and wiggle the upper and lower A-arms, you'll know if they are sloppy.

And if your A-arm bushings are shot, I would suggest replacing them with metal bushings. There's a guy on DooTalk who makes them out of bronze oil-lite. They'll set you back about $80, but you won't have to worry about worn bushings again for about 10,000 miles.

Jimfsr is right the center shock and spring is critical to ride and control. So many people set them to agresive settings because they think they ride hard when in reality most riding is average. Its not fun tweaking under there on the trail but unless you tweak and try you won't get the ride you want.

Thanks for the replies. I hope to be back up north next weekend and will try adjusting the preload on the center shock. I think all of the shocks in the rear suspension are at the softest settings. I believe the shocks on the skis are 1 click from the bottom. My sleds are up north so I can't look right now.

Can't speak for aftermarket, but I've had all the doo skis on my sleds over the years. Swapped my stock renegade skis out a few years ago for the Summit Pilot 6.9's with duatl carbides on each. I didn't notice any darting, but really can't speak for hard trail riding as I typically play off trail. Both my renegade and Summit have the same set up and feel fine on trails. (No Darting).
