stud removal

Wondering if anyone has any reason I would not want to remove studs from a track. If i purchase a sled with studs I probably will want to remove them (damage to trailer and driveway). Is there and structural reason to leave them in. The track has about 2600 miles on it and is in really good shape.

You could possibly do more damage to the track removing them, unless they come out clean(no cutting them) If you need to grind a few off, you could do some real damage to the integrity of the rubber and cords. I personnally would not ride in MI without studs, too much ice on the hills and in the corners. I feel its dangerous to ride with out them. But, thats my opinion.

How old are the studs in the track. If they are not all rusted in place feel free to remove them. People port their tracks with much bigger holes than the stud holes. Look for tears in the track while your at it. The track will last longer with out the studs in it.

Start trying to remove them and let us know how that works. Seems like they are impossible to break loose after the first year.

Once studded I would not remove them. I would replace the bad ones. You will need a sharp pointy picker tool to clean out the hex spot on the back of the stud. Sometimes a little break away and a low power impact can help free the bolt. If that fails you can cut the nut off with a grinding wheel, very time consuming.

on a track with 144 studs, it took a VERY long time to take the studs out. all but 6 came out with just a ratchet with a hex socket on it, and an impact with the socket for the nut on er. 6 of them i grinded off then sold the track.

I didn't have too much troubles with most of mine....on the stubborn ones I used a nut splitter. Still not fast, but I gotta believe faster than grinding them.
