Summer trails?

Never used the trails in the summer before. Was wondering if you need a summer pass in Mi? Can you use all the same snowmobile trails? And what do people usually ride on them? Side by sides? Dirtbikes? Quads? 2 stroke? 4 stroke? Thanks for any input!!

Recently here in the Keweenaw, the Keweenaw ATV Club was able to get a designated ATV/Side x Side trail from Hancock to Copper Harbor. Most of this trail is the snowmobile trail & No 2 wheeled vehicles are permitted. As is the case on any ATV trail in Michigan, you are required a ORV permit of which is $16.25. There are a number of trails in the UP which are designated ATV as well as side x side but not all are open to side x sides.-Mezz

I would really like to know why you're saying no two-wheelers are allowed on the ATV trail? I'm coming up next week and plan to spend some time riding north of the bridge.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, I am saying that because it happens to be one of the rules not to mention one of the reasons the designated trail was able to go through. In light of the fact that there are a number of private landowners that this trail passes on, it was stipulated by each that as long as there are no 2 wheeled vehicles (dirt bikes) & as long as the trail would be patrolled, they would allow the trail to go through. Now that this designation has been established, no 2 wheeled vehicles are allowed. This rule is printed on the Keweenaw ATV Trail Map. This rule was necessary to get this trail through to the tip of the Keweenaw as well as to get this trail designated as well as DNR endorsed. Keep in mind, this trail will be patrolled by both the Houghton County & Keweenaw County Sheriff Departments. There was a trail dedication & ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday May 25th officially opening the trail. The Keweenaw County Sheriff Dept was presented with an ATV for trail patrol which is partially funded by the Keweenaw ATV Club.-Mezz

What stretch of the trail? From what town to what town? Is it only on Trail 3? Just north of the bridge. Please give me more details. The bikes are street legal so I can get around if needed but don't have an ATV map yet.

Technically that is actually one word: B***S***, but I digress. The trail is run on people's private land who don't want two wheelers. The agreement was no bikes.

This is the same argument that was had about the Chassell trail. Unfortunetaly for people who want to use private land for their recreational use, we must abide by their rules.

Outriggers?

Can ya add outrigger wheels (like "training wheels" on your kid's bicycle) to your two wheeler to turn it into a "four wheeler"? They'd probably have to be much more sophisticated, articulated, not rigid outriggers, though so they'd flex to follow the terrain on the curves & twisties! — Totally non-functional, of course, solely for "appearance". (That and "wheel count")! ;)

Cuzz, I don't have the map in front of me so I can't tell you exactly, however, most of it is trail 3, there may be some area's in between which may have changed route to make the connection, but I can't be certain, I only glanced at the map. I will look it over later & try & give you a more definitive answer. If my memory is worth a crap right now, the trail runs from Hancock to Lake Linden to Calumet, to Vansville with a trail to Eagle River, Eagle Harbor, up to Copper Harbor & through to High Rock which I'm sure you know is the tip of the Keweenaw. [Edited] Now that I have a copy of the map in front of me, in addition to the above, trail 17 (Jack Stevens Trail) from Hancock to Calumet of which meets with trail 3 in Calumet & heads North. Trail 124 from Pheonix to Gay, also from Pheonix to Eagle River which is now trail 151. Trails 134 North & 132 to Lac Labelle are also designated. 134 as you know, will take you to Copper Harbor, there is now a leg off of 134 to Fish Cove & also as mentioned previously to High Rock Bay. There is also a leg off of 134 to the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. I hope that helps a little, best bet though is to get a map.-Mezz

Hancock-Calumet and Freda route are still open to two wheelers according to the Mich DNR trails map

I would strongly urge you to adhere to the Keweenaw ATV Trail map. We don't want to have problems with being able to keep this trail open. Keep in mind, there is a difference in DNR Designated & DNR Endorsed trails. The Hancock to Calumet route is a DNR Endorsed trail as is the Freda trail. The Bill Nichols Trail (3) is a DNR Designated trail which would fall under the DNR's rules. Keep in mind, I am going by what is published on the Keweenaw ATV Trail Map.-Mezz
