SX Viper....Premium Gas

A mechanic told me that I should be running premium gas in my Viper, I have owned this machine pretty much since new and have always used 87 octane fuel. He stated that I was lucky that I have not put a hole through the top of the pistons yet!
Is there any truth to this?......should I be using premium octane?

No you don't need premium. Yamaha only used regular when testing the Viper. The only recent 2 stroke sled they used premium in was the SRX. I used to run premium in all my sleds till I found out how they were developed. Since then I only use regular.

unless you have changed port timing or put a timing key in or shaved the heads 87 is just fine and running 92 will actually decrease performance on a sled designed to run on 87.
