Rusty - As much as I hate to say it... this season is over for me. Unless you're talking November/December 2009 then I'm out.

Is there anywhere you could rent a sled out there if yours isn't a "real" boondockin' sled or is it just crazy expensive? And....would it be as much fun since rentals usually aren't "high perf." machines?

Skidoodood, Your question has many answers. What is your sled? When do you go to the west? Will your sled boondock in certain snow conditions? What do you consider crazy expensive? The stock sleds today actually do a great job. My guide sled for next year will be a 800 Rmk 155x2.4. Nice unit, and bone stock, well sort of..... Your problem will be finding a Doo rental place. Maybe a dlr. close by has a demo you could rent. Research needed. The problem is what will you pay for the fun you seek? Ballpark on rentals seem to be $200 a day. Is 3or 4 days of rental worth the boondocking experience you seek? Start slow, bring your sled and rent one day. If you like it try another, and so on. Or borrow a friends sled. In any case you can find what you want. Its what you will pay. Need more, respond...

I currently have an '03 MXZ 700 that I stretched to 136" really set up for trail riding. Haven't been out West (yet) but have wanted to for a long time. In the grand scheme of things, $200/day for a sled that set to run out there isn't all that bad considering redoing my clutching, jetting, only 136" w/1" lug track, not having to trailer it there. Been a trail junkie all my life but really want to get into the backwoods and play areas out there. Doesn't have to be a Doo either. I'm not stuck on one brand. I do own a Cat too (not that that's a bad thing).

Here is the forecast for the Lander area southeast of Dubois. Wow!!

Dood, don't be afraid of a 136 out west. I started there and got hooked and bought the mountain ride. It's the man, not the machine. You will find that you have a lot to learn. It's easier on a mountain sled, but not required for boondockin. Set your expectations though, don't expect to be able to go everywhere with ease that Carter will go.

Today: Snow. High near 29. Breezy, with a southeast wind between 18 and 21 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible.

Tonight: Snow. Low around 20. Blustery, with a north northeast wind 11 to 14 mph becoming north northeast between 19 and 22 mph. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 18 to 24 inches possible.

Thursday: Snow. High near 28. North northeast wind between 16 and 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 11 to 17 inches possible.

skidoodoo,
as Carter said you would be fine in march snow and for dec or Jan snow you will get thru it but will see were a longer track would be fun, Togwotee rents everything from trail sleds "I guess they have a great trail system"SO iM TOLD, they rent up to a m8 for "boondocking" at TOG you can get a guide and take a day of trails and "off-trail" or you can head right into the back country.
you can fly right into Jackson hole and the lodge will pick you up and with the "all-inclusive" you get cabin, sled, food, guide all you have to do is get their. good times..
ask for Carter he seems to be a good guide. bhawwwaaaahahahahahhaha

Skylar
