Thanks to the guys on trail 12

Huge thanks to the two riders from Rhinelander this past weekend that helped me get my new Viper unstuck. Myself and a buddy of mine were attempting a loop north up trail 1 and back down trail 101 to Bergland that had a stretch on trail 12 that ran along side a road. Trail 12 is not in great condition right now. We came upon an drainage ditch with some open but shallow running water coming from under the highway that should have been no problem getting over. But instead I decided to follow some tracks over a snowed over area that looked well traveled. Upon crossing, the snow collapsed and the front of the sled spiked into the far side of the gulch revealing the running water that was beneath it. I just about went over the bars. I have decades of experience in all conditions and am typically the last guy to ever make a bone head move like this. But there I was.

The sled was hopelessly stuck and then wanted to roll over on its side as we further tried to wiggle it free. But it was wedged too hard at a downward angle and there was no place to get a good footing as the water next to the sled had a 2 foot deep hole. After an exhausting 30-40 minutes of doing everything two guys could do, I made my way up onto the highway to get a phone signal and was actually on the phone to a local sled recovery guy when two other riders approached. Before I could get back down to the gulch to help, two guys had wrapped my tow rope around themselves like a team of horses and with the third guy pushing from the back, suddenly up the skis came and out of the water it went. An amazing recovery and no damage to sled whatsoever. I wanted to give them something for their troubles but in an expected class move, they refused. And reminded me to always stop and help others in need. Which my group has done several times over all the years. We've dug out people on rentals before and even changed a blown belt for a guy that got separated from his group. First time in decades of riding it was me counting on the kindness of others to get me out of a jam. Could not have been more grateful for the help.

I’m glad those two shedders stopped and helped. I have helped many people myself over the years and never took a thing for it except told them to pay it forward sometime. No matter how much experience you have things happen and if you ride enough miles someday it will you that needs help. In my experience snowmobilers on the whole are always willing to stop and help that’s one reason I love this sport. Glad you weren’t injured because it sounds as if it could have happened very easily.

You reminded me of an incident quite a few yrs ago west of Chatam on Trail 8....couple guys playing off-trail and one of them played lawn dart with his brand new Renegade...so my buddy, who is from SW FL, and I stopped to help....got my tow rope out and with us 2 old farts(I was mid 60's, him 3 yrs older) pulling on the rope and the 2 young guys lifting the nose, we got it out and back on the trail....they offered etc. but we refused....so off down the trail we go only to find at the first stop sign 15 or so of these guys buddies waiting for them to show up....NOBODY had come back to check....

Some people's kids...........

Those tracks you saw were Poo or Doo's, ice never stood a chance with your 600+ pounder. Sorry....I just couldn't help but swing at that fat pitch!!! LOL

It's happened to us all, or most of us! LOL! Last year I got sucked into a ditch while looking back to make sure my tunnel bag was fastened. After a few attempts to pull it out with a riding budding this big dude and his wife pulled up and offered to help. Well, he picked up and moved the sled over like a ragdoll and the next pull from the tow sled it was out! That was surely appreciated and of course I offered some cash and he waived it off..... I thanked the both of them once again before they took off.

I also was able to help someone last year. The family and I were pulling up to Slo's in Arbor Vitae and I noticed a UTV kinda stuck off to the side. After sending the wife and kids in I went to see if he needed help. Sure enough an older guy was buried up to the frame!!! After a lot of hand digging we were finally able to pull the tank out of there! Thought I was going to smoke the belt on that one but we did good by making sure it was prepped good.

Anyway, it can and will happen to us all!

Yes they are.

Helped a guy two weekends ago on the north shore - he looked over his shoulder to be sure his wife/girlfriend was still there as we went by, took his eyes off the trail in front of him long enough to get sucked into a 3' hole filled with snow! Would have never known it was that deep without going in - two of us yanked him out in about a minute.

Best part was his wife/gilrfriend never left the seat of her sled!!

Was this in 12 heading S out of Ontonagon? If so, that was where the groomer went in. My group was the ones that started the trail around the hole to the left (I lucked out and had the groomer sit next to us right after he got pulled out of the hole. He was the one who said you could get around on the left side (if traveling S)

Anyway, glad you got help, I always ask people who are stopped if they are OK, you never know. Always like to help as others have said before, pay it forward. I'm sure I'll be screwed somehow and would hope all the help I provided over the years would come back!

Yes the same 12 coming from Ontanogan. Although we were nowhere near that north. We picked up 12 from trail 1 and were heading east to get to 101 when I got stuck.
