The Curious Case of Ty Montgomery

You saw it. I saw it. The whole football world saw it.

An inexcusable mistake after an incredibly boneheaded decision.

We all watched with horror as Ty Montgomery took the final kickoff in Sunday's thriller between the Packers and the Rams and proceeded to fumble away his team's chance for victory.

According to Michael Silver of NFL Media, there's an apparent backstory that leads up to that cataclysmic event. It involves play time, heated tempers and the starting quarterback.

From Silver:

"Aaron was hot," said one Packers coach. "And he had a right to be. He yelled, 'Take a f------ knee!' He was very, very mad."

In the eyes of many of Rodgers' teammates, his ire was justifiable. According to more than a half-dozen Packers players and coaches who witnessed it, Montgomery had thrown a tantrum of his own on Green Bay's previous offensive series, becoming noticeably enraged on the sideline after being removed from the game. At least one player believed there was carryover from that incident to Montgomery's decision to disregard his coaches' instruction and return the kickoff.

"They took him out (the previous drive) for a play and he slammed his helmet and threw a fit," one Packers player said. "Then (before the kickoff) they told him to take a knee, and he ran it out anyway. You know what that was? That was him saying, 'I'm gonna do me.' It's a f----- joke.

"I mean, what the f--- are you doing? We've got Aaron Rodgers, the best I've ever seen, and you're gonna take that risk? I mean, it's '12'! All you gotta do is give him the ball, and you know what's gonna happen."

Well, that explains it

how he ins't already cut is beyond comprehension.
blatant and utter insubordination. he isn't worth it, we're not talking about Davante Adams here. we can replace the four yards a game he averages. I've got an idea how 'bout getting the ball four more times to Aaron Jones Mc Carthy you nim wit.

its the small things like this that separate well run teams from teams who have no leadership direction. Mc Carthy holds no one accountable.
How can his teammates go out on the field with him next week?
Wouldn't doubt it if Montgomery gets more carries next week.
Its one thing to drop a pass, fumble a ball, this was something entirely different.
Hopefully this just speeds up the nail in Mc Carthy's coffin.

Pretty much my thoughts too. He's lucky he doesn't play for Belichick or Holmgren. Heck, McCarthy probably gave him a ride home.

Ya that was a much closer game than anyone thought. It really messed up my napping plans.... I even said to my wife after the rams scored "theres to much time left...." Then he brought it out of the endzone. That type of magic almost always goes the packs way. Not yesterday...

Yeah the putz is all upset because now people are questioning his "Character" due to what happened from the previous series, the tantrum, and then the run out of the endzone. He was trying to plea his case on the news tonight. Overpaid, spoiled idiot. McCarthy should keep him on the bench.

I didn't find it bizarre at all. I've been watching McCarthy 12 years and have always wondered how we won even with Rodgers. This was just the perfect example of how without Rodgers McCarthy wouldn't even be a coach.

There's been a lot of talk regarding this, it will be interesting to see what unfolds from it. He is the 2nd RB and they are carrying 3. It all depends if the Pack think they can win without him and if they have enough depth behind him.
It was an interesting game from a gambling point. The spread was 9 and I picked the Pack. I had the game won easily til Montgomery fumbled that kickoff. Rams score a TD and I (along with lots of others) lose the game. And that's when Gurley does the best play of the game (for me at least) and purposely doesn't score a TD. Its a great football move and it saved my pick!
I am not saying Rodgers would have won that game but that's an inexcusable play. And now the ball is in McCarthy's hands, lets see what happens.

I agree Ty should of took a knee...
But Ty has talent & should be a receiver not a running back!
He's a big, strong boy that should be on the field a lot more than Mike uses him!
The team looks like **** & it really started last season... Another wasted season with Aaron & we're running out of years with him!!!
Need linemen on both sides of the ball! Can't pass rush & can't protect Aaron! Sad...

He GONE...he's available for trade - a mere formality before they cut him, when they find out nobody wants to give up a draft pick.

I've always looked forward to Sundays and watching football. I have boycotted it and have yet to watch a game since week 1. Defenders are not allowed to play anymore and perfect textbook tackles are penalties on the QB's. Boo Hoo! Poor guys getting paid millions now want no risk involved for their pay. The NFL is a complete joke and the fans should take action by not giving them the ratings. They would be better off giving the QB's and Receivers flags and that's the truth. The game would be better to watch than it is right now. Sorry for venting but can't stand the game right now. Bunch of spoiled brats that have to dance when they make one play after doing their job! LOL! Next time I sell a new sled I'm going to dance! LOL!!

LOL its a two hand touch league not flag. Im gonna hold you to that dance Kip! I am sure you are light on your feet!! I do agree with what you said there. The kneeling thing really upsets me. For the same reasons as you mention. Try going to some other country and get paid MILLIONS of dollars for playing a GAME. Stand for the flag!! Sorry to get off topic....

Oh yeah I can really bust a move!! LOL!! You're right slimcake, our anthem should not be used for a platform. They already have platforms as athletes to promote their cause. It's a joke!

Montgomery to the Ravens...
Clinton-Dix to Redskins...
We all know why Montgomery is gone but somewhat surprised the Pack traded Dix at this time for a fourth round pick. I know it was all about money to sign Dix next year but use him for now since he was a first round pick. I hope the Packers aren’t cutting good players to pay Rogers? The Packers are weaker for now with these trades and the trading deadline has passed. I’m not sure how all this will translate in the locker room?

Here's a sample from a website that I follow indicating the amount of changes made since Brian Gutekunst took over from Ted Thompson.

GM Brian Gutekunst continues gutting Packers roster at trade deadline

By: Zach Kruse

Anyone who thought first-year Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst would simply continue down the path first blazed by Ted Thompson has been proven dead wrong.

Gutekunst has all but gutted the roster handed down to him by Thompson in January.

The rapid renovation continued during Tuesday’s trade deadline, with Gutekunst trading away running back Ty Montgomery and safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, both former Thompson draft picks.

The Packers now have 10 picks in the 2019 draft, giving Gutekunst even more ammunition to redesign the roster.

Since taking over as Packers GM, Gutekunst has traded away cornerback Damarious Randall, quarterback Brett Hundley, cornerback Lenzy Pipkins, Montgomery and Clinton-Dix. He’s also released receiver Jordy Nelson, quarterback Joe Callahan, outside linebacker Vince Biegel, cornerbacks Josh Hawkins and Demetri Goodson, fullback Aaron Ripkowski, offensive lineman Kofi Amichia and receiver DeAngelo Yancey, many former Thompson draft picks, and let other former draft picks such as Morgan Burnett, Richard Rodgers and Jeff Janis walk in free agency.

The Packers now have only one player left from Thompson’s 2013 draft class (David Bakhtiari), two players left from the 2014 draft class (Davante Adams, Corey Linsley) and one player left from the 2015 draft class (Jake Ryan, currently on IR).

Four players from three draft classes.

Clearly, Gutekunst believed he took over a flawed roster. Every step of the way, he’s chipped away at what Thompson left him. He took a swing with a pickaxe Tuesday.

All of this just since January

Good to see Montgomery gone!!! No place for that type behavior on any team. And no, he's not good enough to make work what he tried. This move is the only way to get this issue behind them, over with, and to look forward. Perhaps some "no name" will show up with this kind of turn over going on??? But then, what if grub's thoughts come to be that the Pack miss the playoffs by one game??????????? Ouch!!!!!!!!!
