CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- The Old Farmer's Almanac, the familiar, 223-year-old chronicler of climate, folksy advice and fun facts, is predicting a colder winter and warmer summer for much of the nation.

Published Wednesday, the New Hampshire-based almanac predicts a "super-cold" winter in the eastern two-thirds of the country. The west will remain a little bit warmer than normal.

"Colder is just almost too familiar a term," Editor Janice Stillman said. "Think of it as a refriger-nation."

More bad news for those who can't stand snow: Most of the Northeast is expected to get more snowfall than normal, though it will be below normal in New England.

Before unpacking the parka, however, remember that "colder than average" is still only about 2 to 5 degrees difference.

Some other regional highlights:

- Florida's winter could be rainier than most years while other locales in the Southeast and central states will see less rain.

- Summer will be warmer than usual in most places while a drop in rainfall in the country's midsection could hurt crop yields.

- Despite some winter downpours in the west, the almanac says California's drought will likely continue.

- Hurricane season isn't expected to be especially active though a major storm could hit the Gulf Coast in late August.

Man, I hope it's not as cold as it was last winter (I'm in northern Minnesota). I seem to recall hearing that this may be an El-Nino winter...typically, that causes warmer-than-average temps. in the upper Midwest, as I recall? Is that the case?

I dont think anyone knows for certain. What I have read is most likely scenario as of now is a weak el nino.

if super cold means super snow like last year ILL TAKE IT....gladly.

here is a link from a Canadian prediction and a fellow sledder. Good read

I for one certainly hope we don't have a repeat of last winter. The elongated consistent cold was pretty brutal & that kept me from enjoying sledding. The least miles put on, or, should I say, the most miles NOT put on in my 35+ years of sledding. If that happens again, I just may decide to sell it off, we'll see what happens.-Mezz

Jeez, I thought last year was how it's supposed to be....
Snowfall wise, that really should be the norm, but that extended uber-cold, that crap aint normal, maybe in the arctic circle, but not here.:D-Mezz

The cold did keep me from (making plans to go) snowmobiling one weekend last year... and then I ended up snowshoeing multiple times that weekend. So I guess it didn't bother me too much :). It only becomes a bit of a problem when the lake freezes up at the beginning of February.
