What about tip up town? The economy in that area is the worst I can remember. Last year we got snow 2 days before and pulled her out of a nose dive and had a great time! I just worry how far I am going to have to drive to find fresh powder on vacation.

Have 5 of us staying in Mass City from the 21st-24th and looking forward to it. Can't be worse than last years trip in mid Feb. as it was mid 40's in Houghton for two days and they closed the trails in Wisc. Plenty of snow. Think positive.

mspease, You must admit, you have good pizza up your way at Lipsie Pines. At least it was real good the last time we stopped in there. I hear you on the weather. I am hoping to do some riding around Siren the last two weekends of this month, but with the forecast not looking good, it may not happen. I hope your UP trip is great. Been up there a couple times in the Bergland area and had a blast.

misty_pines,

Yep, Lipsie Pines has some excellent pizza, that's for sure. I live less than a half mile from Lipsie Pines on Lipsett (Lipsie) Lake. I know the owner well as I've had my lake place since 1991 and moved up here full time in 2006. I always stop in there when I'm grooming and they always buy me whatever I want to drink and eat. Great people there! What The Heck just down the road has some excellent home made pizza too.

when and where are you going? We are supposed to be the Munising/ Grand Marias area jan 21-24. Now you got me nervous...

I WAS going to leave for Houghton on Jan.22. Now it's wait and see when this pattern changes. Hoping for the first or second week of Feb. now, based on long range models. I got 'burned' last year when I went in mid-Feb. during a thaw. Riding was fair. But the way I see it, if you have some flexability, it's not hard to time your trip during a LES event, which is what I've decided to do.

I have ridden in 50+ degrees on the trails from Greenland North last year. Although we had some bumps and the snow was wet as heck, we had a great time. I would not sweat a few days in the 30's and even if it rains a bit, it may be good for trails as it helps put a little moisture in that otherwise fluffy and dry LES.

Just be aware that there are Winter Carnival events scheduled this year at Michigan Tech from Saturday, January 23 through Sunday, February 7. If you don't already have accommodations locked in, you may not be able to find any place to stay in northern Houghton county, western Baraga county or anywhere in Keweenaw county during that period.
