The yearly thread on "water temps on Lake Superior?"

John,

It seems likes it's been a very warm and humid summer up here in the northland. So with it being so warm I'll ASSUME that Lake Superior is warm as well and it's going to take a long time to cool it down. If the wind directions and conditions are favorable, maybe they'll be copious amounts of LES?

Any thoughts as of mid August?

The surface temps of the lake are a bit warmer, but go down a few dozen feet and just about all of the lake is at around 38 degrees.

Plus, LES formation has more to do with having the right atmospheric conditions than warm lake temps.

So I guess the bottom line is, any early season LES events might have a bit more kick to them, but the ones from around Dec 10th on would not likely be impacted one way or another.

I've always been curious about what warm summer temps would mean for LES in the winter. Guess I know now! Good information at the least.
