Things to do in the Keweenaw for a day

Making the trip in the summer for the first time. Staying in Houghton, but wanted to take the wife and do something interesting and see some of the Keweenaw. Only have a day though. Picking up my son from Tech hockey camp.

Thought about driving up to Copper Harbor, are there any trails to get down to the lake that aren't very long? The wife just had a knee replacement couple months back, so limited on the distance. I know we can drive up on the Brockways just outside of Copper Harbor that is part of the trail in winter.

Anywhere to rent kayaks and get out on Lake Superior for a couple hours or other water way? I know Chad rents some boats for the portage too.

Give me some suggestions.

Thanks everyone. Looking forward to the winter!

Try Keweenaw Adventure Company in Copper Harbor. www.Keweenawadventure.com you may want to see about booking something ahead of time, they have Mountain bike rentals as well as Sea Kayaks to rent with guided tours for each. Not sure when you are coming UP, but if it's this week-end, there will also be a Classic Car Show in the Harbor this Saturday (7/15/17) called the End O the Road Keweenaw Tour & Car show. Should be a lively place with some good weather on tap. Enjoy!-Mezz

I would suggest going to Hunters Point, its an easy walk from the parking lot to the lake.

Or take the Lac La Belle Rd down from Hwy 41 and when you get to the "y" at the bottom of the hill, hang a left and follow that road another 2-3 miles or so. It will take you to Bete Gris (beta gree) Bay. About as beautiful a view of Lake Superior and shoreline as you are going to get anywhere. Don't even have to leave the car, but I suggest a stroll on the sandy beach.

x10 on this. The first time I took my wife up to copper harbor in the fall she had 3 beers with lunch at Mariner and fell asleep for that stretch. So the next summer I told her NO SLEEPY and she was very happy I did. Amazing view. Whos the guy on here that lives on that bay? Eagle Harbor is cool. Bond Falls on your way by? Whats this Hunters Point?

Hunter's Point in Copper Harbor has great lake/harbor access; Eagle River Falls, Haven Falls, Jacobs Falls, and Silver River Falls are roadside waterfalls up that way; Delaware Mine Tour if able to do ~100 feet worth of steps; Brickside Brewery in Copper Harbor; make sure to drive M-26 through Eagle River / Eagle Harbor either going up or coming back.

Let me know if any directions are needed, but all should show up if Google searched.

I've been up several times in all seasons but it's always great to get some reminders of things to do especially in the summer season. I'm coming up solo in 2 weeks and doing a State Park camping tour, Twin Lakes, McClain, Fort Wilkins, one night each place and I was beginning to think about some places to stop besides my usual stomping grounds so even though I wasn't the OP, thanks for the ideas.

X2 My wifes favorite beach and the road is right next to the flat sandy beach!
Hit the Lac La Belle for lunch or an app! great view from their deck!

Most of these plus the Jam Pot (next to Jacobs Falls) and Eagle Harbor lighthouse were on a list I gave to a co-worker and her husband who visited earlier this summer. As they were driving, he kept asking her what's next on "Gregslist".

Thanks to all on this post for the suggestions. Although, I only had a couple summer days in the UP, I hit many of the stops suggested up top. It is all beautiful country, even in the summer. Son loved the MTU hockey camp too, so will be back next year for the summer. And of course, the winter too! Shout out to copper country taxi for pointing me in the right direction for the ride with Mak's Taxi. Jim from Mak's taxi was waiting for me at the airport, as promised. I was impressed because it was probably a child who took my reservation, LOL. Anyways, good times, eh!
