I was wondering what some of your opinons/experiances are on the new Ski Doo 1200 4 tec Renegade?

I am just tired of the unreliabilty of two strokes....

I have a 2008 Apex LTX GT after years of two strokes, and this thing rocks. I guess a lot depends on what your main riding concerns are.

May have opportunity to put some miles on Ski Doo 1200 4 tek MXZ next week. Riding an 07 Apex Attack GT & lovin it. Constant 2s engine problems drove me to 4s as well. Best thing I ever did was leave Doo 2s & buy my Yamaha. 5000 trouble free miles gas & go sled. I like etek but don't think it will hold up like a 4s over many many miles. Everyone should own 1 high performance 4s & decide for themselves. Try it you will like it.

Can plugs be changed trail side? Or is that not a problem. I am looking into getting back into trail riding a bit and wonder if the 4 strokes run fine with say a 800 2 stroker on the trails. I am talking all day high speed trail riding. I know they are heavy but do they tire you out anymore because of it? I have stayed clear of the 4 strokes because of the laim heavy frontier sleds that Pol put out. I still have my Yami leather from the 80's. lol

yamaha 4 strokes (apex) have more power than a guy can handle. for high speeds... 4 stroke all the way. polaris 4 stroke frontiers were a joke. id take a yamaha apex over anything for all around trail performance even though they are a little heavier

Plugs are very tough to change on the FST, but I had 7,000 miles on mine before I changed them and they didn't look too bad either. As long as you warm up the 4 stroke and don't just start them and shut them down, you will rarely have plug problems. At least that's my experience.

I don't think I would want to change 4s plugs trailside but 5000 miles on original plugs still humming never got anything near that with 2s. 4s more like a car when it comes to plugs than 2s engine. Have not fouled one yet & should not with fuel injection. Like Mark said wait for warmup light to go off & ride until you shut it off or gas up & ride some more. No adding 2s oil just ride. I have somewhere around 600-700 or more miles so far this year & won't take lid off until 1000 miles to check fluids & chain. Then only 5 minutes & riding again.

From what I read on them, they appear to be a nice machine.

I had a Yamaha Apex, which for what it was, it was a nice sled, but I'm back to a 2-stroke Polaris, guess it's all in what you want.

Ok as for keeping up no problem there ((probally end up leading )) -- getting tired ((NOT)) 300 miles and still able to ride yet unlike some of my buds we are all in our 40's !! as for changing plugs its easey if you are familare with how the sled is assembled and comes apart -- no worse than the new 4 stroke doo's ((my opinion )) !! these apexes are a brease to ride if set up proper ! my buddies brother in law has the DOO's 4 stroke Drinks gas like going out of style compared to Yamaha's and there clutch engages at 1500 rpm low end grunt But dont know how belt is holding up yet im suprised it is still on the sled yet especially how the eng is mounted in there alot of play !! and the handeling is like a dump truck !! For the $$$ Go Yamaha you will be pleased with yourself and your wallet and reliable as all heck great warrenty .. TAKE A TEST RIDE !! If you are still stuck on the doo pull your wallet out swallow maybe pass gass and start shelling cash out then go for it (( make shure you get a warrenty with the doo !! minimum 4 years bumper to bumper )).. good luck !!

Not sure what you said, but I have been drinking too! lol. I will look into the 4 strokers for trail. i do like the idea of not buying oil all the time.

Never really been brand specific myself. Have owned them all (cept poos for some reason) Always have loved the ride on a doo, and the quick rosponce. With that said this Attak I just got flat out rocks. Only got about 500 miles on it so far but the last guy really set it up good. Everytime I get on it I can't believe the pull. Weight, I honestly don't even notice it. In the powder I have to play a little more to turn it but I think that is the 144 pushing it a little. Lined it up against my 01 and 07 800 doo's and blew them a way. Thought it was me riding a little better so I switched out with the wife once, and the boy the other time and when they were on the attak they blew me a way. My buddy the other night who is doo all the way, no exception rode it. He has an 01 800 MXZ, rode my wifes 800 Blizzard about 50 miles. Talked and talked about how much better it was to ride then his MXZ. (which it is) and then I let [had to talk him into] riding the Attak back. Let's put it this way, he can not believe that sled. He said that was hands down the best ride he ever had in his life....period. Trails that night were really good to great. The bumps where only mild with a couple of mogels. yesturday went out with the wife and kids. Trails were smooth as glass in the a.m. and pretty rough on the way home in the p.m. None of them could touch me and I could easily do another 200+ today. Like I said you really (at least I don't) notice that weight. The only think I don't know is how far that spedo is off. I have had it up in the low triples a few times but last night on a straight a way (acutually a rode) I looked down to 123 and still had some left but I really thought that was fast enough. That really shocked me. Makes me want to find a radar gun and see what this thing can do. As far as milage my wife does a little better on her 07 800 doo then me but she is not quite so hard on the fun button out of the courners. Still a lot nicer then the MXZ chassis. As far as oil, depends how much you ride. Basically an oil change is around $40 so if you only use 2 gallons of 2 stroke oil a year you are basically the same. As far as plugs I let mine warm up good before I ride cux I AIN'T CHANGING those things trail side. It ain't hard, but it ain't 2 minutes either. Sorry for the long post and I doo want to ride a 4 stroke doo, but I also want to wait a couple of years to let that motor prove it self, but I would have to say that I would be real hard pressed to go a way from yammy right now, and I don't think I will ever look back from 4 strokes again, if the 2's survive....

polarisrider1; Think he likes his Apex & does NOT favor Doo 4s. Can change plugs if you know what to do. He likes Yam 4s but took me a while to understand but it was late. lol

I have an 07 and 08 Yami 4S triples and 00 and 05 Polaris 2S 600's. I have found the Yami's to be totally reliable. I love the 18-19MPG's that they average. And don't miss buying or carrying around injector oil.

I do notice the weight, but only when the trail is tight, or when moving it around in the garage. But...it hasn't stopped me from riding when and where I want.

About my only 'complaint' is that you MUST change the oil in ths spring before storage, so now I find myself doing most of my annual maintenance in April rather than October. But not a biggie, just something different.

3500 and 2500 hundred miles on the Yami's so far and no plug changes. I have spares and am thinking about changing them, but.....no need so far. Maybe next year!

I ride an 08 Nytro, I just got back from 4 days in the northwoods, I was riding with a 2000 MXZ 700 and a 06 MXZ800 - I had no trouble staying with them on the trails, we always ride fast, the sled is a little heavy in super tight turns, but we all ran about the same. When it came to gas I got between 16 to 18 mpg. I really enjoy not buying 4 stroke oil and the torque is incredible. On the lakes we were all almost dead even when racing. I will never go back to a 2 stroke again.

I had a Yammi 4s and 3 of my buds had yammi 4s also. We all had problems with our sleds. Though all the motors were always fine. Broken driveshaft, broken chain and housings X3, broken skid rails. We are all back on 2s sleds. Yes 2s motors are less reliable than 4s, but we all hated the ride and handling of the Yammi. We are all much happier now, even if it means rebuilding the motor every 5-10k miles, and buying 2s oil. BTW the MPG on the Yammis wasnt as good as many people like to say it is.

2 stroke sleds arent for everyone, but neither are 4 stroke sleds.

Thanks for all the comments! I think the time has come for a new machine......

Machz u will love it! I just purchased a 2010 Ski Doo 1200 Gade X and man I love it. Hands down the best sled I have ever owned! I cam off an 2005 Ski Doo MXZ 800 H.O. As far as someone saying handles like a tank?? Not sure, maybe that guy does not know how to set the sled up, it took me all of 300 miles to dial this sled in but its great! And If you call 16 miles to the gallon a gas guzzler then ok! Before I ordered mine I did a lot of research on Doo talk in the XR 4 stroke forum and could not find any reason not buy one. Good luck I can tell you if you get it you will love it.

I see some guys saying well 4 strokes are hard to change plugs. Listen this is a whole new motor. Plugs no longer need to be changed. Do you change plugs in your cars or trucks every other week? The answer is NO! Most cars or trucks recommend you change them every 100k miles. This is probably equivalent to 20k miles on a snowmobile. So basically you don't change plugs on 4 strokes. You can in the off season if you want but its not something you have to do anymore. The trick is letting your motor warm up before shut it off. get it good and hot and you won't have any plug problems. There is no oil to foul them up.
