This is just a suggestion

I am only speaking for myself but I have noticed that the site has become very frustrating to log on and navigate lately. It wasn’t always this way. To the IT department: 1) when logging in and entering the site would it be possible to forgo running any ads for 60 seconds? That would give the users time to log in and get to where they want to go without the frustration of clearing multiple pop ups from the screen to move on. 2) find out what is causing the site to be directed to a message that states “an error has occurred” or something to that effect and then you need to start all over. Those are two things that really make navigating this site pretty difficult at the moment. In closing, I’ve been a member for quite a number of years and love the discussion forum and wouldn’t change how it is set up, the people on this site are very friendly and polite and give good and honest information on trail conditions so for me it’s such a value to me personally as I am not on Facebook. Just a suggestion, thanks!

it seems to me and what I find interesting reading some the frustrations from other posts recently that some are having different difficulties than others, able to access when others cant. As far as the log in goes I saved my log in and password so that it logs in automatically to avoid all what you have described. The big thing for me and I'm willing to bet for others are the ads. Other sites I visit are dotted with ads but aren't popping up all over the place like they do here, I don't have a computer at home so I rely on my shop one to look at the site, I refuse to surf it on my phone as it seems the ads are even worse on it and to be honest if that was my only access I wouldn't consider it. One of the other sites offers a $4.99 no ads access to it, mind you yes there are ads but again not popping up all over the place like on here and aren't as bothersome. I also agree with you Paul that I wouldn't change the set up of it either other than giving Kelly (skiroule) his own forum heading. There are other sites out there and many of them are obviously put out there by the same entity just under different names as other than the name the sites are exactly the same i.e. HCS, Cat chat, Doo Talk etc all the same under different name. Just like John's forecast style there will never be another like it and IMO would be sacrilegious to allow someone else to post weather on this site. Just like his forecasts the set up and feel of this site is all its own, taking that away or changing it would no longer be "John Dee" so I too hope it goes unchanged, Like Paul I don't Bookface nor do I ever have any interest in doing so, nor do I believe we need to be like all the other sites. "John Dee Snow Central" has always been and always should be its own animal as I believe John intended it to be. I also agree with Paul as to the honest, polite and friendly feel this site has (BTW i am not a liberal LOL) if you look at any given time the amount of guests on line way outweighs the amount of members. I don't have the answers as to how to get more to post but I wouldn't change a thing about the site, doing so would take away from Johns vision, after all the site is still called "John Dee" after the man... the legend himself. I for one would like to see the past members who have left for whatever reason return to this site, and encourage more to join the site as a member, if we are going to have ads, tone down the pop up's and see if we can reserve ads to snowmobiling related ads only and maybe some hunting and fishing maybe. I really enjoy the web cam feature and hats off to all who work so hard to keep them running. Those are my 2 cents worth. Like Paul I have been on this site for a long time and hope it will be here to stay as it is, nothing says it cant be a stand alone site as its feel is not replicated by any other.

I agree with both of you. I would like to add that the pay to avoid adds would be a great option. I would do it in a heart beat.

As far as webcams go, mine was just taken down. No notice, just gone. I tried to get it back up and the person who was in charge at the time was having health issues and didn't have the time to get it added back in. My camera was available every day of the year and not down for the summer. IT was never sitting with an image from 8 months ago so I don't really understand why it was taken down.

John was the one who addressed issues like we are all dealing with and if he didn't like what was going on he changed things. Unfortunately his attention to these matters are lost and no longer being addressed. Not criticizing anyone, but Maybe putting someone in charge of all of this could help the site get back to where it should be? Ships always need captains, businesses always needs someone in charge, etc.

Like I said in the past I am computer illiterate but I had Duck-Duck Go (DDG) browser sitting basically unused because after seeing a TV commercial a few years back I installed it. Google was what I learned on & so I stayed until Tuesday when I tried using DDG for the forum. Not an ad since.
I posted Tuesday that I tried it & a handful of replies came that it wouldn't stop ads. Well still no ads, not 1! At least not on my phone. Haven't tried elsewhere.
About the forum index itself, look at the list & see the last post date on each. Some are several years back. For example, Motorcycle, Hunting, Help Wanted... No activity.
In my opinion, delete these. Downsize, shorten the list.

Geez.. Just fix your browser. I have run Firefox with Adblocker on Windows for years. It keeps me logged in and I have NEVER seen an ad be it paid or pop-up. The only annoying thing about this site for me is all the complaining about it.

I've been using firefox, but years ago I stopped using extensions that were ad blockers since they blocked pop up windows I actually needed. After your post I searched for the best ad blocker extension and selected ublock origin and installed it. So far it's blocked all of the pop windows / ads which was 3 just to login. I will see how this works with what I usually encounter on my daily work on the computer. Not that I wasn't aware of ad blockers but your post inspired me to check it out after many years and so far so good. I cannot run my privacy settings in firefox on strict since it limits normal websites I visit daily but this ad blocker hopefully will help.

Consider Duck Duck Go and the extension 1blockers. I stopped using Google years ago after talking with a former employee there. Very creepy and shady practices that if people really understood what they are doing there would be h$ll to pay. 1blockers extension gives you easy control on top of DDG. If you need to allow a site you can for a day or whenever. It functionally allows you to dismiss (ala carte) a variety of thingys going on that us computer illiterate don’t know or understand, pick and choose till it works or give all control away.

The only reservation I have about blocking ads is wondering if Nora is getting something from the ads? If so, I support her and would through a fee based approach.

ps: all those other sites mentioned do not function for me as their data mining is so severe I will not disarm 1blocker.

If Nora is getting paid for ads, she gets paid whether users are blocking them or not. A fee based approach is nonsensical to me.

My two cents from iPhone user point of view is my only hand held computer I have. Retired and refuse to deal with computer maintenance, virus or updates. If I can’t do whatever needs to be done online via iPhone I ain’t doing it. Dee pop ups are a nightmare anything out there that can be loaded on an iPhone to limit pop ups?

Yes, you can easily block pop-ups on your iPhone through the built-in
Settings app, specifically within the Safari settings, by enabling the "Block Pop-ups" feature, which works for the Safari browser and helps prevent most unwanted ads and windows.

I don't use an iPhone so I can't test it.

Already enabled so doesn’t stop pop ups on Dee. 🤷‍♂️

I agree with you and Paul. Half the time on my iphone and JD is a nightmare to deal with.

I stay logged in all the time, so if the site is good, I'm good. I encounter a few pop ups, but not to bad. Guess, I'm not complaining about the little bs I encounter on a free site .

The amount of "google pop up ads" not paying advertisers to the site, have gotten out of control. It didn't use to be at the level it is currently at. Computers and portable devices alike. It is up to the powers in charge to complete a fix. It's a shame as this issue is diminishing the quality of the site to a degree. Hopefully it will get resolved soon. This is a quality site with quality members, it deserves better quality access.
