No...the trails havent opened yet..however...if you are itching to ride..Lake Nokomis is marked, and ice fisherman are telling me 10 to 12 inches of ice, and we did receive a little snow yesterday, so there is a bit of lube for your slides.
So...if u want to spin around you can...you are welcome to park at the fishtrap, and unload..just come in for a beverage, and we'll make sure your rig is parked in a safe place.
We are all watching the potential snow storm for late week..keep doing your snow dances, and pray for cold weather we need these swamps to freeze up...btw..not all lakes up here are safe, ice conditions vary from lake to lake this year...so use caution.
Merry Christmas everybody!!

I only have one trip under my belt in Wisconsin, last march. It was great. So what is the protocol for trails that run on the lakes if the ice isnt safe early in the season? Are there alternative routes around the lakes in those circumstances? Just curious in case we end up there in a week or 2.

No standard answer for lake bipass trails since so many lakes up here. Best to check maps if lake not marked. Some towns allow snowmobiling on roads some don’t. North Twin has bi pass to from Eagle River to Phelps also land alternative Phelps to Conover just need to check maps know laws regarding riding roads too.

its looking like this is mostly a rain event most of the areas south of about mercer (per weather service) they keep moving the rain/snow line further north every day

Yes...it does look like we might get rain mixing with snow...but nobody seems to have a complete handle on the way this is track...if it tracks a bit more south we will get more snow...either way...we will get snow to begin with, and should get snow on the backside of this system...how much will depend on what happens tomorrow afternoon..are we going to get a mix? Mostly snow? Or rain...I guess we will see, and I will post updates here tomorrow and Friday if I can

I’m 40 miles north of Rhinelander and NBC in Rhinelander not at all confident in this storm since on the rain /snow line is what they said this morning. You’re 20 miles south of Rhinelander so super difficult for Tomahawk to call this storm BUT John has you in his graphics. I’m thinking John’s total storm graphic will work out for both of us and the WUP but it will rain all the way to Houghton some time Thursday just hope that is brief. A little rain could help the ribbon set up so I’m not that bummed about it. Total watch pot tomorrow see what happens.

Hey Atta man, great to hear from you again! I just wish the news was a lot better! It would be nice to at least get a base from this storm. We'll see what happens.

Dont listen to thug boy...yes we got some light rain this morning and early afternoon...but it's starting to transition back to snow as we speak (near lac du flambeau, where I'm working)...
We recieved between 2 and 3 inches of snow over night, and so far the light rain/drizzle hasn't hurt it...as I mentioned it's starting to snow again...we had a group of sleds on the flambeau chain last night...and they were having a blast...while I dont recommend riding the chain unless you know it well (it's not marked)...it was great to see people out trying their new sleds. Nokomis IS marked, so u can ride there if you like...its better than nothing...if you choose to park your big butt on a couch, and not ride...that's your choice...but if you are itching to ride there are options.

Ugggh....switched back to rain...now a rain snow mix...Ugly...I'm disappointed...when it switched to snow this afternoon..I though ALRIGHT here we go..it was accumulating rapidly and then abruptly switched back to rain...smh...sorry..but so far this "storm" is a massive disappointment..i know that's not what you guys wanted to hear..but i try to call it like it is.

That's the best way to do it Attak man. No sense giving people false information. Keep doing what you are doing. My sleds are stored next to Oak's Pub. I appreciate all of your reports.

as of now tomahawk trails are supposed to open Saturday 12/29 5pm
don't be surprised if that changes when they look at the mess tomorrow in the daylight (standing water everywhere)
only time will tell

Update...everything is froze up and very icy...got another inch or so of snow overnight, and currently snowing in ldf.
3 to 4 inches so far from this storm...though the rain did melt some of it down yesterday...this will make for a solid trail base...but everything is icy, walking like a penguin...I'd like to see 3 to 4 more inches of snow on top of this...but it is what it is.

Is it worth it to come up and ride this weekend

Tough question...imo...we need more snow..but you can certainly ride, and some lakes are marked...if you just want to spin around...the snow is very crusty from the rain, and refreezing...currently snowing sideways in ldf...and windy...not supposed to get much, but if it does this all day, we could get a couple more inches.
I can not tell you not to come up...only what I see

trailered to mercer trails decent very heavy traffic they held up good a little choppy at night groomers everywhere go north snowed all day yesterday hurley and north
as far as tomahawk goes with a warm weekend ahead and low snow this might be one of those years where all the riding will be north
